Applications
The Hoya, the student newspaper of Georgetown University, is looking for insightful and industrious individuals to serve as weekly or bi-weekly columnists for the viewpoint page for fall 2008.
The Hoya is the most read publication for the 12,000 members of the Georgetown University community, presenting an unparalleled opportunity to articulate your opinions and ideas to the campus community.
Apply to be a Columnist
Who can be a columnist?
Any member of the Georgetown University community is encouraged to apply for a columnist position — undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, administrators and alumni of Georgetown University, and members of the Burleith and Georgetown communities. At a minimum, we simply require that interested columnists have a desire to write about an issue of importance to the college community and are willing to put in the requisite time and energy.
What does a columnist do?
A columnist remains committed to the underlying tenets of journalism by remaining informed about campus, local, and national issues (whichever is the subject of the column), by thinking critically about these issues, by researching these issues, by writing articulately and accurately about these issues, and by making a point that will provoke others to consider the issue.
Opinion columns are not various musings about a subject. They are well-informed, well-argued, and well organized pieces. Columnists must be able to generate original ideas for their columns on a regular basis. And they must be willing to turn their work in on time and sit down with editors to review and improve the piece.
What should the column focus on?
Columns in The Hoya focus on a range of issues, from campus issues and insights to topics of local or national significance. They should be issues you care about (it’s always easier to write well about something about which you’re passionate) and they should be issues you have researched and understand well. But the best columns, regardless of the specific topic area, remain relevant to the Georgetown University community — they are timely and relevant to the reader and they present an argument. If a reader doesn’t understand how an opinion piece applies to him/her, it won’t get read.
Is there anyway to improve the chances of being selected?
A strong application is most important, but a good way to improve your application is to become a regular contributor to the viewpoint page, which is always open to submissions from the community. If you are not sure about becoming a columnist, or if your application for a columnist position is not accepted, we encourage you to regularly submit opinion pieces to the viewpoint page. This helps you develop your writing style and your voice and it allows us to gain a better understanding of how you write. Individuals who have had viewpoints published in past issues of The Hoya are encouraged to apply because they are familiar with the writing process and because editors may be familiar with their writing style.
