Love for Film Goes Beyond Closing Credits

I love film. I love television. I love drama, comedy, horror, tragedy and everything in between. I love big-budget Hollywood action films and tiny indie films about the human condition. I love nail-biting dramas that keep you guessing from week to week and sit-com slices of Americana where everything is wrapped up in 22 minutes. I love it all.

Tune Into TV That Stays Strong Throughout the Ages

Recently, Empire Magazine came out with a list of the 50 greatest TV shows of all time. Addicted as I am to lists of any kind, I immediately pored through the list with abandon, desperate to see someone else’s opinion and, of course, immediately judge it and pick apart its faults. I was disappointed to discover that the list was pretty good.

Hollywood Moves Toward a New Dimension

Pop quiz! Don’t worry, it’s multiple choice. What has been the most significant technological development in the history of American cinema? Is it A) 35mm projection, B) Sound, C) Color or D) Digital 3-D?

Well, personally, I go with sound, but the growing support for answer D is starting to alarm me.

Hollywood Hair Color Isn’t Always Golden

The writers’ strike is over. I’m overjoyed, I suppose. But the effects of the strike will be felt for months, if not years. And since it may take that long to really know who won, I’m going to reserve my judgment, and therefore my commentary, on the issue.

Student Musicians Make a ’90s Mixed Tape

February is a good month for music at Georgetown — there’s Cherry Tree Massacre, the Fight Song is heard in constant refrain during Big East basketball and, of course, Georgetown Cabaret. Each year, a collection of student musicians treat the campus to a showcase of cover songs and top-notch showmanship at what has become a cherished Georgetown tradition to those who have experienced it.

Will Strike Cause Many TV Shows to Get ‘Lost’?

It’s finally happened. “Lost” is back, but with it has come perhaps the greatest dilemma I’ve faced in my television-watching career. Should I watch?

“But, Patrick,” you say, “Of course you watch it! You love ‘Lost’! You’ve been waiting for this for nine months. How could you not watch it?”

That’s an excellent question, hypothetical reader. I’m glad you asked.

Unconventional Filming Takes the Thrill Out of Thriller

Few filmmakers are as hot right now as J.J. Abrams. The writer/director/producer seems to be everywhere these days, from his mega-hit TV show “Lost” to the much-anticipated Star Trek prequel.

Awards Race Heats Up in Hollywood

In January, cinephiles turn up their noses at drivel traditionally offered by studios and begin girding their loins for awards season. And though the Writers Guild of America strike has put a damper on much of the pageantry this year, it cannot stifle Hollywood’s excitement at the prospect of little gold statues that separate the haves from the have-nots.

Give the Gift of Alternative Holiday Films

Okay, okay. Settle down. It may be December and we may have gotten our first snow of the season already, but we’re not quite at Christmas yet (even if every store is already playing carols). We’ve all got to face down finals before we can really get into the holiday spirit.
