A Season Too Short

After Georgetown beat Marquette 70-68 in the Hoyas’ second-to-last game of the regular season — a result made possible because senior guard Jonathan Wallace made three straight free throws in the last second of regulation — the reporters in the post-game interview tried to get Head Coach John Thompson III to respond with something unexpected to prompts for an evaluation of the season so far.

Students Must Ensure the Future of Feminism at GU

There’s something I haven’t been exactly forthcoming about with you all since I started writing this column about women’s issues: I’m not a women’s studies major, or even a minor.

GUGS T-Shirts Cross the Line

It’s kind of strange to watch the controversy unfold over the GUGS T-shirt. (If you missed it, it says “GUGS: Grade A, Size D.”) It seems to be that the more seriously the protesters take it, the less seriously the backlash takes it, and as the backlash gets more fed up, the protesters get even more frustrated.

D.C. Ballet Pirouettes Into Audience’s Hearts

While the Washington Ballet serves as D.C.’s hometown ballet ensemble, every year, the New York City Ballet, among other touring companies, sweeps into the Kennedy Center to steal the show. This spring, dueling performances by the Washington Ballet and City Ballet presented samplers featuring a total of six different choreographers.

Glass Slipper No Longer Fits Goliath GU

One of the most ubiquitous commercials from the first weekend of the NCAA tournament was a Nike spot featuring Head Coach John Thompson III studying the tape of Georgetown’s loss to Villanova in the 1985 NCAA championship, spliced with footage of the logo of Appalachian State, which stunningly overcame the arrogant No.

David Beats Goliath

RALEIGH, N.C. — Tenth-seeded Davidson ended Georgetown’s season with a 74-70 win in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Georgetown (28-6) had a 38-27 lead at halftime and was up by as many as 17 with 17:52 remaining in the game, but Davidson sophomore guard Stephen Curry powered the Wildcats’ comeback with 25 points in the second half.

Davidson, Curry Await GU in Second Round

RALEIGH, N.C. — Ask junior forward Andrew Lovedale how Davidson, a small-conference power with a 27-6 record, has beaten opponents throughout the season, and he’ll tell you that these Wildcats are fearless.

It also doesn’t hurt that they have one of the nation’s best pure shooters and scorers in sophomore guard Stephen Curry.

Hoyas Rout Retrievers

RALEIGH, N.C. — Fellow 2-seed Duke got a scare from small-conference opponent Belmont last night, but the Hoyas had no such trouble today. Georgetown maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half en route to a 66-47 victory over 15th-seeded UMBC in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

From Patrolling the Paint to Patrolling the Hilltop

It’s hard to get John Thompson Jr. to give statements anymore. Although he always sits in the interview room after Georgetown games to listen in on the press conference, he is not there to talk to reporters. So when I approached him to ask him a few questions for this story, he brushed me off at first, saying, “I don’t do interviews.”

Wallace Heats Up Bradley Center in Overtime

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – Before today’s game against No. 21 Marquette, sophomore forward DaJuan Summers told Head Coach John Thompson III that Georgetown needed to win this game for the seniors.
