Georgetown Swimmers Tune Up for Big East Tournament

The Georgetown swimming and diving program is picking up right where it left off before winter break, continuing an impressive stretch as the team prepares for the Big East tournament in three weeks.

The women’s team won their seventh and eighth consecutive meets of the season this past weekend. The team swam at Albert J. McCarthy Pool, facing Army and St. Bonaventure. The women’s side won handily on both days with scores of 159-133 and 152.5-123.5, while the men suffered hard-fought defeats of 133-153 and 138-162.

Throughout the season, a few Hoyas in particular have made noticeable contributions to the teams’ success. On Friday, it was freshman Christina Daquila, who won the 1000-meter freestyle with the fourth-fastest time in school history. The next day, Christina Costa, also a freshman, won the same event against St. Bonaventure. On the men’s side, freshman Paul Quincy continued his strong season, finishing second in the event on Friday and winning on Saturday.

On both days, the backstroke proved to be a strength for the Hoyas. They went undefeated in the event over all distances, riding the backs of seniors Wes Going and Lindsay Vickroy. The Hoyas posted similar results in the breaststroke, with junior Thomas Graham winning both days, and freshman Amy Ballanfant and sophomore Kathryn Berg putting Georgetown in the top two each day.

Coming up for the Hoyas are two local meets, first versus Howard and then against Maryland. After these final dual meets, it’s on to the Big East championships, the main event Coach Steven Cartwright has been preparing this group for throughout the year. Hosting two consecutive meets this weekend will help Georgetown warm up for the rigorous and unrelenting schedule they’ll face in Pittsburgh, starting on Feb. 12. Both the men and women started off the year in terrific fashion, but only the women have truly sustained the pace. Thus, these next two weeks are of the utmost importance, especially for the men’s side, as sophomore Victor Lopez-Cantera and Quincy look to put the men where they need to be heading into the Big East championships.”
