GU’s Solid Start Cut Short at Invite After Rain Washes Out Final Day

The Georgetown women’s tennis team started its season on a high note last weekend at the UNC-Wilmington Collegiate Tennis Invitational. The three-day event, presented by RBC Wealth Management, began last Friday at the country club of Landfall’s Cliff Drysdale Center in Wilmington, N.C.

The tournament, which included players from UNCW, Virginia Tech and Furman, featured four flights of singles and one flight of doubles. The Hoyas were able to successfully post a number of victories.

In the doubles flight, newly named captain graduate student Stephanie Wetmore and her partner, sophomore Vicky Sekely, won their first match and defeated UNCW’s team of sophomore Christina Riley and junior Casey Dashiell, 8-3. Although the duo competed well again in the semifinal on Saturday, they fell to junior Martha Blakely and senior Holly Johnson of Virginia Tech.

Sophomore Michelle Pratt got off to a positive start in the first round of singles play, beating freshman Emily Warren of UNCW 6-1, 6-1. Her momentum didn’t carry over, however, and she came up short in the championship against Furman sophomore Olivia Maurice, losing 6-1, 6-2.

In other singles action, freshman Madeline Jaeger was unable to win her first-round match in the B1 flight but came back in the second round to defeat Furman sophomore Jenny Porter 6-4, 6-4.

On top of her doubles success, Sekely secured another singles victory for the Hoyas. After faltering on the first day, Sekely battled Furman junior Susan Bitetti in the back draw of the A2 flight on Saturday and came away with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Unfortunately, many of the Sunday matches were cancelled due to rain. But the Hoyas’ results in the matches that were played set a hopeful tone for the rest of the season.

The Hoyas return to the courts this weekend when they host the D.C. Classic on Friday and Saturday.”
