Hoyas Sweep Weekend Tournament as Rezin Earns MVP Honors

After finishing tied for second place at the Georgetown Classic last weekend, the Georgetown women’s volleyball team stole the show at the UNC-Greensboro tournament on Friday and Saturday.

“We went in feeling good, like we could definitely win this one,” said sophomore libero Tory Rezin. The Hoyas (9-5) dominated, taking all four of their matches and the tournament championship. Rezin was named tournament Most Valuable Player, while sophomore setter Ashley Malone and junior middle blocker Vanessa Dorismond received all-tournament honors for the second straight weekend.

“I wasn’t expecting to get it at all,” Rezin said of her MVP award. “It was the last thing on my mind.”

The tournament was highlighted by Georgetown’s five-set victory over ACC foe NC State. The Blue and Gray also notched wins against LaSalle, High Point and hosts UNC-Greensboro.

Georgetown 3, La Salle 0

The Hoyas started off strong against the Explorers (2-15), winning in straight sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-11).

In the first set, freshman outside hitter Paris Coleman served out a 9-0 run to give Georgetown a 16-7 lead – a lead that LaSalle never threatened.

The Explorers were more competitive in the second set, putting together a 9-3 run and enjoying a 17-13 lead at one point. It was neck-and-neck all the way up to 20-19 when junior outside hitter Kortney Robinson took over with a kill and four points on the serve. Robinson made her presence known again in the third, finishing a set from Malone to seal the victory.

Georgetown 3, UNC-Greensboro 1

A rocky start was not enough to stop the Hoyas in their matchup with the hosts as they overcame a 1-0 deficit to win 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-19).

UNC-Greensboro (6-7) opened up a 16-8 early lead, but Georgetown rallied to take a 21-20 advantage on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Sara Manley. Unfortunately for the Hoyas, that was the last point of the set as the Spartans rallied with a 5-0 run to win the first set.

Georgetown put its collective foot down in the following three frames. In the second, following a 23-23 tie, the Spartans committed two attack errors and dropped the set. The Hoyas hit a match-high .286 in the third, which culminated in Manley’s set-clinching ace. In the fourth and final set, UNC-Greensboro never led as Robinson smacked three kills for the Hoyas to help them win the clinching set.

Georgetown 3, NC State 2

The Hoyas’ first match on Saturday resulted in their second five-set win over an ACC team this year, coming on the heels of a thrilling victory over Maryland a week ago, as Georgetown defeated NC State 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 15-7).

“It’s really nice to get wins over teams from big conferences,” Rezin said about the victory. “We feel like we’re right there with them, and those games are only going to make us better.”

The Wolfpack (21-8) clawed their way to a 17-16 lead in the first but were outdone by Hoya kills from Dorismond, Robinson and Manley from then on.

An extremely close second set, consisting of 13 ties and seven lead changes, ended with a Georgetown kill by senior right side hitter and co-captain Kiersten McKoy.

The Hoyas then suffered through two ugly sets, hitting .028 and committing 15 errors in the third. In the fourth, Georgetown went down 8-7 and failed to regain the lead.

Despite the downturn, the Blue and Gray bounced back in the fifth set thanks to service runs from Malone and McKoy. As she so often does, Robinson secured the win with her 11th kill of the match.

Georgetown 3, High Point 0

Brimming with confidence, the Hoyas entered Saturday night looking to complete an undefeated tournament against High Point (13-6) and did so in an emphatic straight-sets victory (25-18, 25-15, 25-21).

The first set included seven ties and five lead changes. Georgetown, however, took the lead for good at 17-16; Coleman scored three aces on the way to a 1-0 lead.

The Hoyas thrashed the Panthers in the second set, leading from start to finish, hitting .640 and playing error-free volleyball. Dorismond added nine kills, hitting at a personal .900 clip in perhaps the team’s best set of the season.

A lull followed in the final set, as Georgetown fell to a .195 hitting efficiency. The Hoyas would trail 16-9 and 20-18, but battled back both times. Two kills from McKoy and a knockout blow from Dorismond closed the book on the action from North Carolina.

“Early in the season, we had some trouble finishing games, but we’re definitely improving,” Rezin said. Having won six straight games, the Hoyas are finally starting to hit their stride.
