Indoor Track Jumps First Hurdle

The men and women’s track and field programs kicked off their indoor seasons this past weekend with the men’s squad running at the Navy Invitational and the women traveling to Lewisburg, Pa., for the Bucknell Opener.

For the Hoyas, it was an all around solid performance as the results showed that the program’s strong core of hurdlers and sprinters has continued to take great strides and looks poised to contribute in a big way when the postseason rolls around.

Junior hurdler Chris Kinney picked up where he left off in last year’s breakout season, running an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.91 seconds in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles and finishing second overall with a time of 7.93.

Kinney, who narrowly missed qualifying for Indoor Nationals a year ago, was not far off his school record time of 7.88, a great sign this early on in the season. Kinney will no doubt try to improve upon his time as the season progresses, as only a select number of the fastest times make it off the provisional list to run at Fayetteville, Ark., in early March.

Sophomore Biyerem Okengwu, who had a breakout race in a school record setting 110m hurdle performance at U.S. Track and Field Junior Championships this summer, also started his season off strong timing in at 8.12 seconds in the finals to finish third.

Other highlights:

– In their first time donning the Blue and Gray, freshmen sprinters Tenille Stoudenmire and Amanda Kimbers showed that there is a lot of potential in the women’s short sprints this year, an area where the program has been lacking in previous seasons. Stoudenmire and Kimbers finished first and second, respectively in the 60m dash with times of 7.59 seconds and 7.61 seconds.

– A host of facility records fell at both sites for the Hoyas, as senior Abigail Johnson won the 300m with a time of 39.61. The men’s 4x400m relay team of sophomores Austin Perron and Theon O’Connor and juniors Toby Ulm and Sean Suber also broke a facility record at Navy, by winning the event with a time of 3:14.27.

– Ulm had a particularly strong opener, running on the record-breaking 4x400m team and also taking first in 400m with a time of 47.99 seconds. Ulm’s 400m time narrowly missed the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 47.85, but it is especially encouraging for the Hoyas that he is running at this level early in the season.

– Juniors Spenser Carter and Suber ran solid in the 200m, with Carter running 22.07 to take third and Suber 22.09 to finish fifth. In the women’s 200m, senior Sarah Wernik took second in 25.48 and sophomore Chela Green took third in 26.37.

– In the women’s 60m hurdles graduate student Nene Kamate ran 8.68 seconds in her Georgetown debut to take second and sophomore London Finley crossed the line in 8.78 seconds to finish fourth.

– Seniors Dan Leyh and Sandy Roberts, with graduate student Cabell Rosanelli and freshman James Farley, took first in the 4×800, besting the field with a time of 7:45.76.”
