COURTESY MARIA CHAMORRO

Maria Chamorro (COL ’12) is a government and theology double major, currently invovled with spreading the word about the values and contributions of Jesuits. As co-chair of this year’s Jesuit Heritage Week, Chamorro is in charge of managing every event and encouraging Georgetown students to learn more about the heritage of their school.

What is your role in Jesuit Heritage Week?

I am the co-chair, and I am in charge of overseeing all the events, trying to recruit people and making sure that everything goes well.

How did you become involved?

It was through Fr. [Philip] Boroughs [S.J.]. Last year, I organized the student outreach service trip, and this year, I became the co-chair. It was wonderful to actually plan something and help out on the board. What is your favorite part about being involved in Jesuit Heritage Week?

I love the Jesuits and their [view of] theology, and I believe that it is really important to educate the mind and the heart and other students, and to work with people who think the same way that I do. It is unbelievable how many people are so helpful with us and want us to do more and more. Just knowing that there are more people who think the way I do and are willing to do the work is amazing.

Who is your co-chair and how was the collaboration between you guys?

My co-chair is Federico Rivas [(COL ’12)], and he is my best friend here. He is amazing and so positive about everything. It’s great teamwork; we compliment one another, I think. We went to a leadership conference in El Salvador, and then both of us transferred to Georgetown last year and have been friends ever since.

What do you think about Georgetown and its Jesuit heritage?

My experience has been so amazing — they have helped me grow immensely. For example, Fr. [James] Schall [S.J.] — he has shaped the way I think now. They want to help you, but they won’t come to you. You [have to] make the effort. I’ve encountered a lot of people who do not know what [being] a Jesuit means, and that’s in part what Jesuit Heritage Week does.

Do you think Jesuit Heritage Week will succeed in creating a greater awareness?

I hope so. I think a lot of Georgetown students are interested in learning more about [the Jesuit order]. It’s just about attending the events, and if [students] are interested, they’ll continue to explore and start establishing relationships with [the Jesuits]!

Anything else?

We owe a lot of it to Fr. Boroughs and the board in helping to organize the week. Thank you!
