L’Aquila Program Moved to Rome

Following a deadly earthquake last week in Italy, university officials have decided to relocate Georgetown’s summer study abroad program in L’Aquila, Italy, to Rome, as residents begin to evaluate the extent of the destruction.

While the Centro di Spiritualità Sant’Agostino, the students’ planned residence for the duration of the program, was not affected by the earthquake, the historical center of L’Aquila, where the building is located, has been closed to the public to allow firefighters and engineers to assess the damage.

“Although our students’ residence does not seem to have been affected, an inspection of the building and the surrounding area will probably take some time,” said Laura Benedetti, a professor in the Italian department who accompanies students during the program.

The American University of Rome will provide logistical support for the newly relocated program.

“They are providing classroom space on their campus on the Janiculum – one of the nicest areas in Rome – and furnished apartments,” Benedetti said.

According to Benedetti, Rome is an attractive alternative due to its rich history and culture. She also stated that the new location will make weekend travel more convenient for students.

“Rome presents obvious advantages thanks to its historical heritage and countless cultural offerings,” Benedetti said. “Of course, we would have preferred never to have to relocate, but given the circumstances, this is a great solution.”

The structure of the program, including duration and course offerings, will remain the same, according to Benedetti.

The Office of International Programs Web site states that the original program featured weekly excursions to neighboring areas, including Rome. L’Aquila and Rome are 70 miles apart.

Cristina Dinu, overseas studies adviser for the L’Aquila program, did not return requests for comment. Preeti Krishnan (COL ’11), Kristen Cates (COL ’11), Kate Bermingham (COL ’11) and Sarah Balistreri (COL ’12), students who were planning on participating in the summer program, could not be reached for comment.
