MEN’S SOCCER | Georgetown Takes Down Providence at Home

The No. 2 Georgetown men’s soccer team continued its strong start to Big East play with a 2-1 win over the Providence Friars at home on Shaw Field last Saturday as the Hoyas go to 2-0 within the conference.

Providence (6-3, 1-1 Big East) started the game putting the Georgetown (7-1, 2-0 Big East) defense under pressure, using their strong midfield and quick counterattacks. Junior defender Rio Hope-Gund came up big early as his one-on-one defending helped the Hoyas survive a particularly dangerous Friars counterattack.

In the 22nd minute, the Hoyas had their first standout chance of the game after a free kick. Freshman defender Daniel Wu headed the ball from just outside the 6-yard box toward the bottom corner of the goal. The Friars’ goalkeeper, however, came up with a big diving stop to keep the game scoreless. Neither team would have another great scoring opportunity throughout the remainder of the half, and the game entered the break scoreless.

Early in the second half, Georgetown began to gain a foothold in the game and started making more frequent and effective passes going forward into Providence territory. In the 48th minute, freshman forward Will Sands dribbled the ball into the box but was taken down by a rash challenge from a Providence defender, resulting in a penalty kick.

Junior forward Derek Dodson calmly stepped up to the spot and buried the penalty down the center of the goal, as the goalie missed the ball by diving left to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead. Minutes later, Sands was once again heavily involved in the Blue and Gray’s attack as his shot on target was repelled by another leaping save by the Providence keeper, one which required a quick reaction time.

In the 75th minute, Georgetown doubled its lead, courtesy of junior midfielder Foster McCune’s first goal of the season. Junior forward Jack Beer found Dodson with a long diagonal ball into the corner. Dodson then played an early ball into the box, finding McCune to make a far-post run. McCune’s strong, one-time finish found the back of the net, putting the Hoyas up 2-0.

Minutes later, the Friars equalized in the 80th minute when Andualem Chisholm scored from 6 yards out after a solid build-up play full of effective passes from the Friars. Through the final 10 minutes of the game, Providence continued to stay on the attack. However, the Hoyas’ defense held strong and successfully repelled the Friars’ final few attacks, hanging on for a 2-1 victory.

With this 2-1 win over Providence, Georgetown improved to 2-0 in the Big East. Although the Friars outshot the Hoyas 11-5, Georgetown had five shots on target to Providence’s three. Freshman goalkeeper Tomas Romero earned the win in net, his fourth of the season.

Head Coach Brian Wiese was pleased with the team’s victory over a team like Providence, whose strong offense had helped them win their only other Big East game, having defeated the Seton Hall Pirates 1-0 on Sept. 27.

They have one of the best midfield groups in the league and Providence is one of the better teams we’ve played all year so it’s a great result to get three points in the league against a team of that caliber,” Wiese said in an interview with GUHoyas.

The Hoyas will look to continue their winning ways in Big East play when they travel to Chicago to face DePaul on Friday at 2 p.m.
