The Georgetown University Law Center (GULC) dean and executive vice president William “Bill” M. Treanor will step down at the conclusion of his term in June 2025, announced by the university Dec. 18.
Treanor, who joined the GULC in 2010, oversaw the fundraising of $100 million for a new academic building and encouraged the Capitol Campus’ growth with GULC at the center. Treanor will step down as dean to take a research leave, and will then return to teaching as a member of the faculty.
According to the email Interim President Robert M. Groves sent announcing Treanor’s plan to step down, a plan for GULC’s new leadership will be announced in upcoming weeks.
Groves said Treanor’s service to the Georgetown community is appreciated.
“Bill has served Georgetown with extraordinary distinction and has become known as one of the most effective leaders in legal higher education around the country,” Groves wrote in the email.
“We are grateful for his leadership and his contributions here at Georgetown,” Groves added.
In his email to GULC students, Treanor said he was grateful to have led GULC to accomplish its mission as a Jesuit law school.
“It has been an extraordinary privilege to have served as dean,” Treanor wrote in the email. “When I first came to Georgetown, I spoke to our alumni, faculty, students, and staff about how I was drawn to Georgetown by our compelling educational mission, and that mission is as important to me today as it was then.”
