After Georgetown University Law Center (GULC) Dean William “Bill” M. Treanor steps down June 30, Joshua Teitelbaum will serve as interim dean of GULC, the nation’s largest law school, starting July 1, university Interim President Robert M. Groves announced April 14.
Teitelbaum, a professor of law and economics at GULC since 2009, studies the intersection of law and microeconomic theories of behavior. He will serve as interim dean throughout the university’s search for a permanent dean to replace Treanor.
Teitelbaum said in an April 14 GULC press release that he looks forward to leading the law school.
“I feel honored to have been chosen to lead the Law Center during this interim period, and grateful for the confidence placed in me by President Groves and my colleagues,” Teitelbaum said. “Georgetown Law is my professional home. I love Georgetown, its people and our mission.”

Teitelbaum, a graduate of Williams College, Harvard Law School and Cornell University, began his career as a corporate lawyer before moving into academia. He has previous experience in administrative positions, serving as a GULC associate dean from 2015 to 2017, and in legal writing, with research appearing in multiple legal and economic journals.
Groves said Teitelbaum would be an effective leader for the law school.
“Professor Teitelbaum has all the talent and collegial support to lead the Law Center through the next months as we search for the new dean,” Groves said in the April 14 press release.
Treanor, who will retire after 15 years as dean, has overseen rapid growth at GULC, including increasing fundraising, hiring new faculty and expanding program offerings — a tenure Groves described as “a time of innovation and growth.”
Groves said the university will continue its search for a permanent dean in consultation with faculty.
“Over the past few months, I have engaged our Georgetown Law faculty to understand their priorities for interim leadership and the future of the Law Center,” Groves wrote in the email. “While we plan for our search for the next leader of Georgetown Law, we are fortunate to have Professor Teitelbaum as the Interim Dean.”
