SAILING | Perrenial Power Reloads for New Campaign

After another season as one of Georgetown’s most dominant sports teams, the coed sailing team will look to continue their success for the 2018 campaign in Annapolis, Md., on Sept. 8.

This event will mark the Hoyas’first time competing in the water since their third place finish in the ICSA Coed National championship back in May.

When reflecting on last spring’s finish, Head Sailing Coach Mike Callahan praised the development of the squad.

“Last year we had a really young team and finishing third at the national championships was really higher than we sort of expected for that group to do, so we were very pleased,” Callahan said in an interview with The Hoya.

While surpassing defending champion MIT will prove a daunting task, the Hoyas have reason for high aspirations.

The Hoyas attained the number one spot in the national poll last fall before finishing the year ranked fourth. Georgetown’s sailing team was the only team on campus to own that ranking at any point during the fall.

Georgetown Sailing Team, ranked No. 4 at the end of last season, will welcome three all-Americans back to the Hilltop this fall.

The Hoyas will return three out of the four sailors who were named All-Americans in the spring. Sophomore Caroline Teare and juniors William Logue and Sean Segerblom will lead the Hoyas in their fall schedule.

Supplementing the leadership of the three All-Americans are juniors Haddon Hughes and Rebecca Fung, both of whom are considered two of the top sailors on the roster. The sailors look to add a national championship to their resume, giving their coach confidence.

“You always think if you finish second or third the year before you’re going to have a better chance, especially when the people who beat you graduated all their starters,”Callahan said. “If everything goes well…we certainly have a great chance of winning it this year.”

With great talent and coaching, the Hoyas look to go beyond the results of past years and take another step towards winning a national title.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Head Sailing Coach Mike Callahan competed for team USA as a member of the sailing team.
