Students Dodge For a Cause

Seven teams faced off on Saturday in the third-annual Charity Dodgeball Tournament, hosted by Hoyas Global Initiative. HGI began this November tradition in order to support Kiva, a microfinance organization that supports economic development in developing countries.

The HGI Charity Dodgeball Tournament was held in Yates Field House. According to Katrina Koser (SFS ’12), one of the student leaders who organized the event, the tournament was a success.

“All of the teams did a great job. It was a very positive afternoon filled with exciting dodgeball action. There were dives and spins and referee challenges. Everyone was really excited about the game and giving to charity,” Koser said.

The winning team and the runners-up were presented gift certificates for various establishments. Team Metalloids won the award for best team spirit.

“The registration for each person was $10, so we raised quite a bit [of money] . People played dodgeball to change lives. . It was an afternoon that everyone can be proud of,” Koser said.

Diederik Minkhorst (MSB ’10) says he was satisfied with his participation in the event.

“We signed up for the event because it seemed like a fun idea and our entire house could participate as a team. It was a lot of fun playing in the tournament, and it was also a significant factor that we could contribute to Kiva, which everyone in our house feels is a fantastic organization,” Minkhorst said. “Play dodgeball, save Africa. What more could you want?”

HGI, which is sponsored by the Center for Social Justice, Teaching and Service, promotes community service on the personal, local and international levels. Modeled after the Clinton Global Initiative, the club’s mission is to make community service an integral part of the lives of its members and the Georgetown community. It manages to do so while providing an outlet for some competitive fun on campus.”
