SWIMMING AND DIVING | GU Falls to Drexel Despite Strong Individual Performances

Georgetown’s swimming and diving teams fell to Drexel University in Philadelphia on Saturday. The women’s team lost to the Dragons 169-125, and the men’s team fell 176-112.

The women’s team took the top two spots in the 1000 freestyle, with junior Cristina Barrett finishing in first place and freshman Noelle Fimbres finishing 13 seconds after. Barrett also placed first in the 500 freestyle, and sophomore Phoebe Slaughter took another individual win in the 200 individual medley.

Capping off the women’s victories, sophomore Grace Sun, freshman Grace Chen, senior Laine Morgan and Donohoe combined to place first in the 200 freestyle relay.

In the men’s 1,000 freestyle, senior Michael Wheeler took first place, just 0.07 seconds ahead of the Drexel swimmer in second. Freshman Carlson Temple won the 200 breaststroke, and Carbone finished first in the 100 individual medley. The men’s 200 freestyle relay team with junior Jack Calderwood, freshman Sean Devlin, and seniors Jacob Kohlhoff and Seth Maslowski also placed first.

On the diving boards, junior Griffin Edmonds won the 3-meter diving event, while sophomore Riley Fujioka won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

Earlier in the week, sophomore Drew Carbone was named swimming and diving Big East male athlete of the week. Sophomore Belinda Donohoe also earned female athlete of the week. This award marked Carbone’s second weekly award of the season and the fourth of his career, while the accolade was Donohoe’s first.

The awards recognized Carbone’s performance in the meet against George Washington University and American University on Jan. 12, where he remained undefeated in the backstroke events. Donohoe also produced impressive performances by winning both freestyle events, as well as being a part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team.

After a break from meets this weekend, the Hoyas will travel to South Orange, N.J., for a two-day tri-meet with Big East rivals Providence University and Seton Hall University on Feb. 1 and 2. This meet will be Georgetown’s last before the Big East championships, which begin Feb. 20.
