SWIMMING & DIVING | Three Divers to Represent GU at Championships

Georgetown’s diving squad faces its toughest test yet as they take on their conference rivals at the Big East championship in Louisville, Ky., which begins today and runs through Sunday.

Senior Caitlin Karniski, who achieved a top-16 finish at last year’s event, looks to lead the Hoyas back to the scoreboard again.

“She did very well last year,” Head Coach James Holder said of Karniski. “[And] we definitely expect Caitlin to do well again.”

Karniski has been strong this season, with two highlights coming on senior night against local rival George Washington when Karniski broke school records in both the one- and three-meter dives. Her scores also qualified her for the NCAA zone championships, which will be held March 11-13 in Annapolis, Md.

Joining Karniski to dive for the Georgetown women is junior Angela Pontes, who qualified for the NCAA zone championships last year. Pontes qualified for the one-meter dive in a meet against American and James Madison on Jan. 15 and then followed up that performance by posting qualifying scores in the three-meter dive during the Senior Night meet.

“I think Angela is very capable of scoring for us,” Holder said.

The Blue and Gray are sending one male diver, junior Brian McCallister, to the Big East championship. McCallister, who qualified for both the one- and three-meter dives during the meet against the Colonials, looms as a scoring threat.

Diving Coach Emily Richmond thinks McCallister has a good chance to score for the Hoyas, especially since there are a relatively small number of male divers and the division is less competitive than the women’s side. Throughout the season, McCallister has posted his strongest scores in the three-meter event, but it looks like he could make an impact for the Hoyas in both events.

In their last meet, which was against a strong Maryland squad, Karniski finished in a strong second place in the one-meter board. Karniski and Pontes both struggled in the three-meter dive and McCallister did not compete, but their performances — which came amidst preparations for the conference championship — should give the Hoyas hope for this weekend.
