The Georgetown golf teams, competing at the Big East championships over the weekend, continued their successful spring seasons. On the Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame, the men finished third in the conference, placing two golfers on the All-Big East team, and the women took fourth place.
Sophomore Matt Meyers was the top men’s finisher for the Hoyas, scoring 219, nine over par, to tie for fifth place. Senior Nick Cook also finished in the top 10, shooting plus-12, to take seventh. Both Meyers and Cook were named to the men’s All-Big East team for their performances.
Sophomore Christy Larrimore was the women’s top performer on the weekend for Georgetown, shooting 221, just one stroke behind Big East champion freshman Alison Walshe of Boston College.
In three rounds of competition, the men shot 896 and the women tallied 952 on the 54-hole course. On the men’s side, Notre Dame took the top spot with an 876 and defending champion Virginia Tech was not far behind at 882. Notre Dame also finished in first place on the women’s side, earning its second consequential title. The University of Miami and Boston College finished in second and third place, respectively, in front of Georgetown. This is the second consecutive year that Georgetown has finished third in the men’s competition, as well as the second straight time the women have finished fourth.
“This was a good opportunity to finally make a dent in the reign of Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, but we didn’t play up to our standards,” men’s Head Coach Tom Hunter said.
“We didn’t play the kind of golf we’ve played all year,” he added, explaining that they did not have five strong scores as they usually have. “Each day we had three good scores and one bad score and you can’t win an event like that. It wasn’t our weekend.”
The other players on the men’s team also turned in solid performances. Sophomore David Erickson and senior Jamie Farrah each shot 228 to tie for 15th place. Freshman Tim Moynihan was Georgetown’s fifth golfer at the event, shooting 257 to take 30th.
The women’s team placed all five golfers in the top 20. Behind Larrimore, junior Connie Isler finished in 12th with a 240. Sophomore Nicole Hayashi was only two shots behind her teammate, tying for 13th with 242. Freshman Rosalina Ascolani shot 249 to take 17th and sophomore Erin Cockren rounded out the team with 256 in 19th place.
The Big East championship was the last scheduled match for the women’s team this spring. The men will finish out their spring season this weekend at the Penn State Invitational on the Penn State Blue Course. This is the last event for the men before the NCAA East Regional tournament, which the team qualified for last season.
