The Georgetown field hockey team suffered a frustrating 2-0 shutout loss to Villanova on Wednesday, dropping its record to 12-5.
The Wildcats got ahead of the Hoyas early in the matchup when freshman forward Leah Lisausky scored on a penalty corner at 7:22. The score at halftime remained 1-0.
Villanova extended its lead to two on a goal by junior forward Stephanie Vrettos off a fast break at 43:19.
The Hoyas were unable to score despite numerous opportunities in the second half, taking 34 shots on goal while the Wildcats had only 23.
The normally productive Hoya corner unit of freshman midfielder Elena Elster, freshman forward Leeanne Rizzo and junior forward Aubrey Bruggeman was stifled by the Wildcat defense. They failed to score on all 12 penalty corners they were awarded.
The outstanding play of Villanova’s sophomore goalkeeper eghan Helwig played a large role in thwarting the Hoya offense. Helwig had 19 saves on goal.
“We came up against a very hot goalie. She was outstanding,” Head Coach Laurie Carroll said.
The Hoyas had most of their opportunities toward the end of the second half, when their play became more intense.
“In the beginning of the game, we didn’t have the same sense of urgency as at the end. We need to have that any time we get in our attacking end. We had our opportunities, but we didn’t finish,” Carroll said.
As the Hoyas look forward to their last game of the season against Bucknell on Saturday, Carroll noted that they need to work on shooting, finishing and lifting the ball in practice this week.
“They have to make some adjustments. Hopefully we’ll have that sense of urgency since it’s the last game of the season,” Carroll said.
In other team news, Leeanne Rizzo was honored with the Eastern College Athletic Conference’s field hockey player of the week award. Last week, Rizzo had three goals and two assists in three games, earning her eight points. She scored the only goal for the Hoyas in their 2-1 double-overtime loss to Richmond. Rizzo is now second with eight goals scored and third with 19 points for the Hoyas. She has scored in seven games this season.
The Hoyas look to break the Georgetown field hockey team’s record for most wins in a season in their last regular-season game this year, senior day.
Because the team is not affiliated with a conference, they are not guaranteed a spot in a postseason tournament. They have landed a spot in the ECAC postseason tournament, which will occur Nov. 11 and 12.
Georgetown will face Bucknell tomorrow at noon on Kehoe Field.
