GU Hopsital Walkout Cancelled

Yesterday, Georgetown University Hospital workers were scheduled to walk off their jobs, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., demanding affordable health care, job security and fair wages from their employer edStar Health, the third largest employer in the Baltimore-Washington region.

MedStar has left the workers without a contract for five months as it continues to stall negotiations with the workers’ union, Service Employees International Union Local, according to the Georgetown Solidarity Committee.

GSC members had planned to join the workers in a rally outside of the hospital to demand that MedStar negotiate a fair contract with the workers.

However, the walkout and rally were cancelled at the last minute. Union officials have said that there was a phone call between the union and MedStar about an hour before the walkout was scheduled to occur. GSC speculates that MedStar agreed to return to negotiations with the union and may have begun to offer concessions.
