Former Hoya golfer Nick Cook ( COL ’04) was eliminated from play in the 104th U.S. Men’s Golf Amateur Championship on Aug. 19 after losing to two-time Amateur Public Links finalist Dayton Rose in the third round of play.
After 20 holes of play at the Winged Foot course in Mamaroneck , N.Y. , Rose defeated Cook to advance to the quarterfinals. Cook advanced to the third round with wins over Jordan Nasser in the second round and Roger Hoit in the opening round.
Cook qualified for the tournament with a second-place finish at the Sectional Qualifier at Woodbridge Country Club in Connecticut . It was the second time that Cook qualified for the U.S. Amateur.
Cook was the captain of the 2003-04 Georgetown men’s golf team. He was named All-Big East as a senior and finished his collegiate career with a seventh-place finish at the Big East Championships in April.
Former Hoyas James Farrah ( COL ’04) and Chris Lange (GSB ’76) also qualified for the tournament, but neither earned the scores required for match play.
The men’s golf team begins fall competition on Sept. 13 at the UNC-Greensboro Invitational at the Mid Pines Resort in Pinehurst , N.C.
On the women’s side, Georgetown junior Christy Larrimore won the 2004 Women’s Amateur Golf Championship presented by the Maryland State Golf Association in July. With a final score of 73, Larrimore won by one stroke over Mallory Crossland to become the youngest champion since 1997.
Larrimore advanced to the finals with wins over Lesley Stracks in the semifinals and Kim Daniels in the second round. In the first round, Larrimore was the overall leader.
Last season, Larrimore was the individual runner up at the Big East Championships and the winner of the Lady Eagle Invitational, both in April.
The women’s golf team starts the fall season on Sept. 25 at the Princeton Invitational in Princeton , N.J.
