The Georgetown football team will look to raise its record to .500 this Saturday as it travels to Connecticut to battle Fairfield at 1 p.m.
The Stags, a former Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival, enters the game with a record of 3-2. After a bye last week, Fairfield is coming off a victory against St. Peter’s College on Oct. 14.
“This is a heated rivalry,” Head Coach Bob Benson said. “We always battled with them and Duquesne for the top of the MAAC.” Benson went on to say that with the Hoyas’ jump to the Patriot League next season, this could be the last time the two teams meet. Add to this the fact that the Hoyas are fighting for a winning season, and the importance of the game rises drastically.
“This is a huge game, very big,” Benson said. “What’s important is a winning season. We need to get to .500.”
Georgetown and Fairfield share two common opponents in Duquesne and Fordham. Fairfield and Georgetown dropped both games, Fairfield losing to Duquesne, 21-20 and to Fordham by a score of 34-7, and Georgetown falling to Duquesne 44-20 and to Fordham 17-10.
Last season the Hoyas bested the Stags by a 21-14 margin, with Fairfield recovering a fumble in the Georgetown endzone late in the game to bring the score within seven. This year the teams look like they will match up well against one another once again.
Like Georgetown, Fairfield features a sophomore quarterback, ike Cerchio. In Fairfield’s last game, Cerchio shredded the St. Peter’s secondary, deftly passing for a school record 410 yards. Cerchio is coming off consecutive MAAC offensive player of the week honors for the weeks of Oct. 7 and Oct. 14.
Last Saturday, Georgetown quarterback, sophomore Dave Paulus, tallied his third 300-plus yard passing game of the season, completing 17 of 31 passes for 325 yards.
