The Georgetown field hockey team was selected to compete this weekend in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Field Hockey Championship. The tournament, which will take place at Dartmouth on Saturday and Sunday, features Georgetown, Columbia, Dartmouth and Villanova. The Hoyas are seeded fourth and will take on the top-seeded Columbia tomorrow at 2 p.m. Dartmouth, the second seed, will face third-seed Villanova in the first round tomorrow at 11 a.m.
The Hoyas’ first-round opponent, Columbia, was 11-6 this season. This is Columbia’s first ever appearance in a postseason tournament.
“I know Columbia is a well-balanced, well-coached team. They have benefited from good recruiting,” Head Coach Laurie Carroll said. “They’ve turned around their program very quickly, like we have.”
If the Hoyas are victorious over the Lions, they will take on the winner of the Dartmouth-Villanova matchup on Sunday at 3 p.m.
“The team is very excited. We felt that we deserved to go, but you never know. So we’re just thrilled. Playing in a postseason tournament is tremendous for us,” Carroll said. “It’s something we’ve always hoped for.”
In other field hockey team news, senior midfielder Sarah Oglesby was selected to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Senior All-Star Team. Oglesby will play for the South team in the North vs. South All-Star game on Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m.
Oglesby was one of the three captains of this year’s team, which had the most wins, with 13, and the best record in school history with a 72.2 winning percentage. Although her season ended early due to a hand injury, Oglesby was second on the team in assists with nine. She is tied for ninth in career goals, with 18, and 13th in career points, with 42, on the school all-time record list.
