The Georgetown football team will look to redeem itself this weekend at home against former Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Marist. The Hoyas are on a three game losing streak, while Marist has won two in a row, defeating Wagner and Iona.
The rivalry between Georgetown and Marist began with their first meeting in 1994. Ironically, 1994 was the last year Georgetown football entered its sixth game of the season, also against Marist, with a record of 2-4. The Hoyas were victorious in 1994, and have yet to lose to the Red Foxes in their six subsequent contests. Last year Georgetown edged out Marist, 41-40, in overtime.
This year, the contest seems equally challenging for the Hoyas. arist features two strong sophomore running backs in Chris Price and Alfredo Ruillano. Both Price and Ruillano rushed for over 100 yards in Marist’s last game against Iona. The tandem will prove a tough challenge for the Hoyas, who gave up 345 yards rushing in last week’s loss to Duquesne.
“Last week was disappointing in that the defense did not play well at all after playing very well against Fordham and Bucknell,” Head Coach Bob Benson said of Georgetown’s loss to Duquesne.
“We have to stop being a roller coaster team,” Benson said. “We’ve been making mistakes on both sides of the ball. We’ve been giving [our opponents] points. We’ve got the talent. We just have to get consistent.”
Georgetown, which has struggled to get its running game in motion this year, will face stiff opposition in Marist’s defense. Last week, Marist held Iona’s Ralph Saldiveri, the AAC’s leading rusher and preseason Offensive Player of the Year, to just 18 yards rushing.
The Hoyas have focused on their passing attack in recent games, including a school record 13-reception performance by sophomore wide receiver Trenton Hillier last week.
“We’ve got some good receivers,” Benson said. “And hopefully we’ll get our running game going. The important thing is to get win number three. We’ve got to get win number three.”
While Georgetown has struggled somewhat to this point in the season, the Hoyas are facing a much tougher schedule this year than in the past.
“If someone asked me in the beginning of the year if after our sixth game of the year we could be 2-4, I would have said `absolutely,'” Benson said.
Georgetown will square off against Marist tomorrow on Kehoe Field at 1 p.m.
