Coming off impressive wins at the Penn Relays, the Georgetown track and field teams continued their success over the weekend at the Big East Outdoor Championships. Led as always by impressive distance performances, the men’s team finished fourth in the conference and the women tied for fifth.
Individually, four Hoyas picked up conference titles. Senior Jesse O’Connell won his second-straight 800m title with a time of 1:50.16, just in front of senior Ali Najjar, who finished at 1:51.05.
Georgetown swept the 1,500m event, taking first on both the men’s and women’s sides. Sophomore Chris Lukezic took first for the men with a time of 3:49.65 and senior Treniere Clement won her second consecutive 1,500m title, clocking in at 4:21.49.
Sophomore Fleet Hower won the Hoyas’ other individual title in the 10,000m in 30:43.59, his first outdoor title.
Both the men and the women dominated the relays, which is always Georgetown’s strongest event. The men took first in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter relay races, their second straight in the latter event.
The women did not take a conference title in the relays but had a strong overall performance. The Hoyas took second in the 3,200-meter relay, less than four seconds behind the event-winner Villanova. In the 1,600-meter relay the women finished in fifth place and in the 400-meter relay the Hoyas took eighth in a tight race.
The Georgetown men put up top-five performances in the 3,000m steeplechase and in the 800m and 400m hurdles. Senior Dan Tebbano took fourth in the steeplechase at 9:14.09, while senior Ezra Richards and junior Nat Glackin each took fifth in the 800m and 400m hurdles, respectively.
The women also turned in numerous top-five finishes. Junior Nicole Lee took second in the 10,000m, senior Maura McCusker finished third in the 800m and senior Monica Hargrove contributed a fifth place finish in the 400m.
The men of Notre Dame and the women of Miami claimed the Big East overall team titles. It was the second consecutive title for the Fighting Irish and the fourth straight for the Hurricane women.
This weekend the Georgetown team will travel to the University of North Carolina and James Madison University for the Blue Heaven Classic and JMU Invitational, respectively.
