As the Hoyas gear up for a home game against Ivy League power Harvard tomorrow, Head Coach John Thompson III will soon have one less weapon to utilize off his bench.Redshirt sophomore forward Nikita Mescheriakov has decided to transfer out of Georgetown at the end of the Fall 2009 semester. His destination is currently unknown.”Nikita expressed the interest to transfer to a school where he knows he will get more playing time than he feels he will get here,” Head Coach John Thompson III said in a release. “We wish him the best in his future endeavors and appreciate his hard work.”After replacing senior guard and fan favorite Jessie Sapp in the starting lineup for the final nine games last season, Mescheriakov saw a significant spike in his playing time. With the arrival of freshman swingman Hollis Thompson and the emergence of junior forward Julian Vaughn and sophomore guard Jason Clark this year, however, the 6-foot-7 Belarus native has been spending most of 2009 on the bench. In limited time, he has posted averages of less than a point and a rebound per game.Known for his hustle and occasional sweet stroke from beyond the arc, Mescheriakov struggled on the defensive end against more athletic forwards. The highlight of his Georgetown career came on the road in the Hoyas’ upset of Villanova, in which he scored a career-high 11 points. In his one-plus seasons playing under Thompson, Mescheriakov, the seventh Hoya to transfer in the past four seasons, averaged 2.3 points on better than 33-percent shooting and 1.2 rebounds. “
