It was a game of catch-up, but Georgetown never caught up.
After rallying from an early 2-0 deficit to even the score in the second half, the Hoyas could not retain their momentum to provide the go-ahead goal and ended up falling to the Lehigh ountain Hawks 4-2, dropping Georgetown’s record to 1-3 on the season.
Lehigh jumped to an early lead on Saturday, netting half of its goals within the first five minutes of play. Sophomore midfielder Christy Smith scored unassisted in the third minute, while senior defender Mary Beth Kuenne added another off a corner kick two minutes later.
It was a struggle for possession throughout the first half, but Georgetown established itself on the scoreboard in the 15th minute of play when freshman midfielder Katie Lachman pushed through to score an unassisted goal. It was Lachman’s third goal in her first four games as a collegiate athlete.
After the halftime break, the match went scoreless for nearly 20 minutes, with neither team able to keep the play on its offensive end for long. Then, off of one of the Hoyas’ seven offensive corners of the game, sophomore midfielder Deirdre McShea found the net. The goal tied the game up at 2-2.
The deadlock did not last long, though, as Mountain Hawks senior forward Maureen Harrington scored twice more in the next seven minutes.
The Hoyas proved incapable of answering the two goals, leaving the final tally at 4-2.
Georgetown matched Lehigh shot for shot, and the Hoyas totaled more shots on goal than the Mountain Hawks. Senior captain Caitlin Bump said the statistic reflects something the Hoyas have been aiming for in 2005.
“One [goal] was to be aggressive, to minimize their offensive corners,” she said. “We’re pretty happy about that.”
Freshman forward Maggie Farrand generated four of the Hoyas’ shots, three of which were on goal. Farrand and Lachman, who scored Georgetown’s first goal of the game, are among a number of talented freshmen who have seen action and produced results for Georgetown in the start of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Deirdre Crovo has played two complete games, and saved four goals on Saturday before being relieved by junior Abby Winer for the last eight minutes of the game.
“I think they’ve got a lot of energy and a lot of skill,” Bump said of the underclassmen’s presence. “I’m very, very excited about it.”
“We’re going out to win every game,” Head Coach Laurie Carroll said of the Hoyas’ start to the season. Although Georgetown has only won one game so far, the team pushed Radford to four overtimes in a 3-2 Hoya loss.
Georgetown will take to Kehoe Field at 3 p.m. Wednesday for their next match against Drexel.
“We’ll fix a couple things we could have done better today,” Carroll said of the upcoming game. As for the rest of the season, “We feel we have a lot of wins ahead of us,” she said. “We’re out to get wins, bottom line.”
