Dan Gelfand/The Hoya Junior Lydia Bartell returns the ball with a forehand. After a three set victory in the first round of the ITA Regionals, Bartell fell in the next match.
Two Hoyas participated in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Eastern Women’s Regional Championships at Virginia Tech this past weekend: junior Liddy Bartrell and freshman Eileen Boyle. A large and important tournament, the winners of each event move on to the ITA Intercollegiate National Indoor Championships held the second weekend in November.
Bartrell got only as far as the second round. After defeating arist sophomore Yana Tikhonko, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, Bartrell was ousted by William and Mary junior Lena Sherbakov in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Sherbakov had a first-round bye but succumbed to fifth-seeded Eva Wang of Harvard in the third round in a closely contested battle, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3).
Boyle, who was coming off a strong showing the previous weekend at the Old Point Bank Collegiate Championships, did not make the tournament’s main draw. She fell in the first consolation round Saturday morning to Maryland sophomore Jennifer Dent, 6-1, 6-4.
Georgetown’s only representatives at the tournament teamed up for the doubles competition, where they had similarly disappointing results. Freshman Chloe Lipp and senior Emily Wennick of Colgate handed them an 8-5 loss in the opening round.
With no Hoyas advancing to either the men’s or women’s ITA Championships, the Georgetown fall tennis season has concluded. The teams will retake the courts in the spring, though their official schedules have not yet been posted.
