Georgetown announced March 6 that it had named Daniel D. Sedmak, .D., as Executive Vice President for Health Sciences. Sedmak, who currently serves at Ohio State University as Senior Associate Vice President for Health Sciences and Executive Vice Dean of the College of Medicine and Public Health, will start his new position at Georgetown on July 1.
University President John J. DeGioia strongly supported Sedmak’s appointment, and particularly noted Sedmak’s excellent medical experience and leadership potential for the university’s medical center.
“Dan Sedmak comes to Georgetown with a very accomplished scientific and medical background, proven leadership skills, a deep understanding of the complex challenges facing academic medical centers and a strong commitment to excellence in research, education and clinical care,” DeGioia said in a March 17 press release.
Sedmak received his medical degree (summa cum laude) from The Ohio State University and a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Cincinnati. He expressed great enthusiasm about beginning his new position at Georgetown. He feels privileged to begin work and implement change at such a respected medical center.
“These are challenging times for all medical centers,” Sedmak said in the press release. “But there is enormous potential for continued growth and advancement at Georgetown. I am honored and excited about the opportunity to lead this internationally renowned medical center, and am very much looking forward to working with the Georgetown
community.”
Georgetown University Medical Center, which recently established a new faculty governance plan and a fundraising partnership with edStar Health, will benefit from Sedmak’s leadership in achieving its future goals, which include increasing federal support for research, attracting greater philanthropic involvement and realizing its potential for research, teaching and clinical care. By appointing an experienced leader in the medical teaching and research field such as Sedmak, Georgetown is making substantial strides in improving its medical facilities, DeGioia said.
“I am confident that under Dr. Sedmak’s leadership, we will meet these challenges and realize the great promise of our partnership. As Executive Vice President, Dr. Sedmak will be responsible for oversight of all research and education activities of the Medical Center, as well as all fundraising and administrative functions. He also will chair the Medical Center’s Executive Committee,” DeGioia said in a March 5 letter to the Georgetown community.
DeGioia celebrated the dedicated efforts of Georgetown’s medical community in his letter. “Together, we have accomplished much. We have recruited a distinguished leader of the Lombardi Cancer Center. We have prepared well for several important site visits: the LCME site visit of the School of Medicine, the NCI site visit of Lombardi and the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education’s accreditation visit of the School of Nursing and Health Studies.”
Sedmak held additional leadership positions as Interim Dean of OSU’s College of Medicine and Public Health and Professor and chair of Pathology at OSU and also currently directs the Nephropathology and Transplant Pathology programs at the Ohio State University Hospitals. He comes to Georgetown with specific research experience on cytomegalovirus infections and renal diseases, having written more than 100 peer-reviewed articles. He also serves as an editor of the Transplantation and Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Science and as a principal investigator for three related National Institute of Health grants.
Stuart Bondurant, M.D., will remain in his position as Special Assistant to the President for Medical Affairs until Dr. Sedmak begins his job on July 1.
