“Senior day is ideally about the seniors,” Georgetown Head Coach Pat Conlan said after Georgetown swept Coppin State 17-0 and 19-0 in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
And it was all about them on Tuesday as Georgetown’s two seniors, first baseman Cathy Richter and third baseman Lacey Campbell, drove in a combined eight runs in the Hoyas’ blowout victories. Cambell and Richter are the lone seniors on the second-year program’s freshman-heavy roster.
“Both Cathy and Lacey had outstanding days at the plate and in the field,” Conlan said. “Their performance was a tribute to all the hard work they put in the last two years.”
Campbell went 2-for-5 on the day with three RBIs and three runs. Richter added five RBIs, including a solo home run.
“My parents were there to see it, and it was the first time they saw me hit a home run, so it was very exciting,” she said.
Georgetown (12-37) opened up the first game of the doubleheader against the 0-22 Coppin State by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. Up 4-0, Campbell stepped to the plate with two on and knocked a single through the left side to score Richter to put the Hoyas up 5-0.
A two-run single later in the inning off the bat of freshman second baseman Jadig Garcia scored junior outfielder Katherine Lang and Campbell to give Georgetown a commanding 8-0 lead.
Richter led off the second inning with a 225-foot home run to give the Hoyas a 9-0 lead. They would add two runs in the third and six more in the fourth for the 17-0 victory.
Freshman pitcher Jennifer Connell pitched a complete game, giving up only three hits and no earned runs. Garcia and fellow freshman Olivia Newhouse each went 3-for-4 driving in a combined seven runs.
The second game was more of the same for the Hoyas as they continued to pile on the runs. They once again jumped out to an early lead scoring nine runs in the first inning. Up 12-0 heading into the fourth, Georgetown added seven more runs to seal a 19-0 victory.
Freshmen infielder Samantha Peters continued to hit the ball well, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Freshman pitcher Sarah Kamenski pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out nine in the process. Sophomore Katie Zoch also spurred the Hoyas, going 2-for-2 with three runs batted in.
The star of the day, Richter, went 1-for-1 with a walk, but she made her one hit count – it drove in three runs.
“I wish I had another year,” she said after her last home game for Georgetown, “I enjoyed every minute on the field.”
While Richter’s short, two-year stint is over at Georgetown, she was an integral part of beginning this still young program.
“I’m really excited to come back and watch the team improve because I think that next year is going to have great things in store,” she said.
Georgetown concludes its season this weekend with a doubleheader at Marshall on Sunday in Huntington, W. Va. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
