A Georgetown student was allegedly verbally harassed with homophobic slurs at the intersection of S and 37th Streets early Saturday evening, according to a Metropolitan Police Department report. The incident occurred around 7 p.m., when the male complainant and a friend, who have both been granted anonymity due to the sensitivity of the incident, were moving furniture between two houses on 37th Street. As the two students walked past the intersection, a large group of males reportedly made comments about the complainant’s sexual orientation. The complainant reported the incident to the Department of Public Safety, which then filed a report with MPD. The university sent out a broadcast e-mail last Sunday outlining the alleged event, which it called a “bias related incident.”Speaking to reporters Tuesday, the complainant said he felt the university had handled the situation responsibly. He said he has spoken with DPS Director Jeffrey Van Slyke, LGBTQ Resource Center Director Sivagami Subbaraman and the Office of Student Affairs.”Administrators are taking the issue seriously, issued a public service announcement by Sunday evening and are continuing to provide support to the victim, investigating the incident and following up on all aspects of the situation,” university spokesperson Julie Bataille said.Want to discuss THE HOYA’s coverage of this issue?
