‘Tis the season! The semester has finally come to an end, and those Grinch-like finals are approaching. This is the season for late nights of studying and writing papers, inevitably resulting in crowds of sleep-deprived students packing into the library. However, you should not feel that you are confined to Lauinger as your only option. The university is equipped with four other libraries, Blommer Science Library, Dahlgren Library, the Woodstock Theological Library and the National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature. Though there are alternate choices of libraries for studying, the truth is this is still not enough space. We have over 5,000 undergraduate students here at the university, and thousands of law and medical students, but there are only five libraries in which all of these students are expected to study. The university needs to do a better job of offering study space during final time. This time is crucial to any student, and we should not have to clutter together in one area to study. Since we do have other libraries besides Lauinger, the university should not only publicize the availability of these spaces more conspicuously but also keep them open for longer hours. In addition, students should know that buildings such as the Bunn Inter-Cultural Center, Walsh, White-Gravenor and Reiss have open class rooms that can be used. Besides concerns over study-space availability, there is also the concern of study time. With finals only lasting eight days, students resort to drinking coffee, hoarding up on energy drinks and using other chemicals in order to keep awake. It is thus essential for students to carefully monitor their intake of drinks like Red Bull and Full Throttle, as well as be mindful of the stress that chemicals and sleep deprivation can have on their bodies and minds. Though these aids can be helpful during study time, they can also be dangerous in large amounts. Ultimately, students should be mindful that finals do not make or break their college careers. To my fellow students: Plan out your studying time, find a quiet area away from the crowd, do not forget to sleep, and your holidays will be all the merrier. And on that note – the Editorial Board would like to wish you a merry finals season and a happy new semester.
