Georgetown’s original and largest undergraduate school, the College of Arts & Sciences was founded in 1789 along with the university; it was the university’s only option for undergraduates until the founding of the School of Nursing in 1903 and became co-ed in 1969. Known as just “Georgetown College” from 1990 to 2022, you’ll still hear students refer to the school as “the College.” It offers 50 undergraduate majors across the arts and sciences — everything from American musical culture to women’s and gender studies. The College’s curriculum offers, even mandates, flexibility — students must take at least two semesters of courses in language, philosophy and social sciences and at least one semester of humanities and science. Notable alumni include the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia (CAS ’57) and former English major and current actor Bradley Cooper (COL ’97).

Primary Academic Buildings: Intercultural Center (ICC)

Founded in 1919, the SFS is the United States’ oldest continuously operating school of international relations; it was founded six years before the U.S. Foreign Service even existed. The SFS offers bachelor’s degrees in foreign service (BSFS) and joint degrees with the McDonough School of Business, all with an international focus. Among the world’s elite schools of international affairs — with policymakers and think tank staffers ranking its undergraduate program best in the world in a Foreign Policy ranking this year — the SFS is known for its rigorous requirement that graduates attain proficiency in a second language. The SFS offers majors in international politics, international history, international economics, international political economy, global business, culture and politics, regional and comparative studies and science, technology and international affairs. Former faculty members include two secretaries of state in Henry Kissinger and Madeleine Albright; notable alumni include two current senators, a former secretary of state, the current kings of Spain and Jordan and former President Bill Clinton (SFS ’68).

It also offers an interdisciplinary program in international business, language and culture with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Business and Global Affairs program with the School of Foreign Service. The MSB is the most heavily male school at Georgetown; In 2020, 61% of its students were male. School of Health
Majors: 3
Students (as of Fall 2023): 370
Primary Academic Buildings: X
Dean: Christopher J. King
The School of Health is Georgetown’s newest undergraduate school — its establishment in 2022, when the university split its old School of Nursing and Health Studies into two parts, scuppered The Hoya’s tradition of comparing undergraduate schools to Hogwarts houses. For undergraduates, the School of Health offers majors in global health, healthcare management and policy and human science; its programs aim to address the major problems in healthcare from an interdisciplinary perspective. The school is young, and no graduates have yet completed four years in the School of Health.
School of Nursing
Majors: 1
Students (as of Fall 2023): 115
Primary Academic Buildings: St. Mary’s Hall, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital
Dean: Roberta Waite
Although the School of Nursing and School of Health split in 2022, the School of Nursing existed well before then — established in 1903, it was female-only until 1972. The School of Nursing’s first male students graduated in 1976. Today, the undergraduate school offers one major, nursing; Prospective nurses at Georgetown have access to the facilities at Georgetown’s medical school and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Alumni include Christine Grady (NUR ’74, GRD ’93), a noted bioethicist and the wife of distinguished professor Dr. Anthony Fauci, and Patricia Grady (NUR ’67), a neuroscientist and researcher recognized for her work investigating strokes and other neurological disorders.
