For the Hoyas, conquering the Mount was not as hard as it may have sounded.
Both Georgetown teams recorded 7-0 sweeps of Mount St. ary’s in dominant fashion, winning every set of both dual matches.
Coming off a 6-1 win over Rutgers, the Hoya men appear to be hitting their stride. They won both doubles matches and all five singles matches against the Mount, which was forced to forfeit the third doubles match and sixth singles match because only five players made the trip to the Hilltop.
In the singles matches, freshman Anthony Tan won easily 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, in what would be the closest singles match of the day. Junior Jeff Schnell, sophomores Adam Gross and Kenneth Wong and freshman Will Lowell all shut out their opponents, cruising to a slew of 6-0, 6-0 wins.
“[The team wasn’t] heavily challenged, but they showed great focus,” Head Coach Gordie Ernst said.
On the women’s side, the Hoyas won for just the third time on the year, upping their record to 3-11 as they prepare for conference play this weekend.
“The girls came to play. We needed that win before the Big East matches,” Ernst said.
Georgetown won all three doubles matches by the same score, 8-1, to head into the singles matches up 1-0.
Playing at No. 2 singles, sophomore Courtney Olsen battled to win her first set 7-5 over Mount St. Mary’s freshman Chelsea Johnson, but from there it was smooth sailing for Olsen and Georgetown. Olsen would go on to win the match 7-5, 6-2.
Olsen’s first set would be the closest call for any Hoya, as the other five singles players won with ease.
Junior Adriann Gin did not drop a game at No. 5 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Shelley Murveit won her first collegiate match as she downed freshman Emily Gargan 6-3, 6-2.
On their Big East road trip this weekend, both Hoya squads take on St. John’s on Friday and Connecticut on Saturday. The men are 1-0 in Big East play, while the women are 0-3.
“We’re caught up in the Georgetown spirit,” Ernst said. “It started with the basketball team, but it goes to tennis, believe it or not. The guys are fired up to go get a win because we are Georgetown.”
