Hoyas Face Off Against Yale’s Offensive, Defensive Leaders

The Georgetown football team will be looking for revenge when they take the field tomorrow afternoon against Yale. In [last season’s matchup](https://www.thehoya.com/sports/ground-attack-stalls-in-yale-bowl-rout/), the Bulldogs embarrassed the Hoyas 47-7. Unlike last year, however, tomorrow’s game will be played on the Hilltop.

QB Pat Witt

Once again, the Hoya defense will be challenged by a potent Bulldog offense. In an effort to slow them down, the Hoyas will focus on stopping sophomore quarterback Pat Witt. Witt, a transfer from Nebraska, played in five games for the Cornhuskers last season and was expected to compete for Nebraska’s starting quarterback position this season, but he decided to transfer to Yale. After playing in the highly competitive Big 12 conference, Witt is expected to enter the game with more than enough poise and big-game experience.

Perhaps the most impressive fact about Witt is that he won the starting job over incumbent junior quarterback Brook Hart. Last year, Hart set a Yale single season record with a 62.1 completion percentage while throwing nine touchdowns against only two interceptions. Stopping Hart would have taken a huge effort from the Georgetown defense, and Witt may pose an even greater threat. Yale Head Coach Tom Williams said that Witt has been more consistent in the pre-season workouts and has a better overall body of work. The Bulldogs have high expectations for Witt, and it will be up to the Hoyas to find a way to slow him down; otherwise it could be another long day at the MultiSport Facility.

DB Larry Abare

While the Hoyas’ defense will be trying to shut down Yale’s passing game, the Hoyas’ offense will be attempting to find a way to solve the stingy Yale defense. Rated as the number one scoring defense in all of the Football Championship Subdivision last season, the Bulldogs return several starters to a veteran defensive unit. Leading the way for the Yale defense will be senior strong safety Larry Abare. Abare led the team last season with 78 tackles while also notching one interception. Known as a hard hitter and fierce competitor, Abare was selected as a member of the 2008 All-Ivy League team. Additionally, some commentators give Abare an outside chance of being selected in the 2010 NFL draft.

As a fifth-year senior, Abare provides plenty of leadership and experience. He has led the team in tackles in each of the previous three seasons and seems to enjoy playing against Georgetown. In 2007, he stopped the Georgetown offense on a goal line stand to preserve the victory for Yale, and last year, he had 10 tackles and an interception. With another year of experience, Abare presents a formidable challenge in this year’s matchup. The Hoya running game will need to be productive because Abare will make moving the ball through the air very difficult. “
