Swimming Coach Resigns to Enter Priesthood

Georgetown University announced on Friday, May 21, 2010 that Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Head Coach Steve Cartwright will step down from his position at the end of June.

The reason for Cartwright’s resignation is that the head coach plans to return to the seminary at St. Charles Borromeo in Philadelphia, Pa., in the upcoming fall, in order to study for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, N.C.

Cartwright has been a coach at Georgetown for the past six years, the last three as Head Coach of the program. During Cartwright’s six years with the program, 34 school records have been broken, while the Hoyas have excelled in the classroom as well.

The Collegiate Swimming Association of America has awarded academic All-American honors to members of the swimming team for 36 consecutive semesters. Additionally, both the women’s and men’s teams have achieved the distinction of having the highest team GPA in the country, in 2006 and 2007, respectively.

This past season, the women’s team went 10-2, breaking nine school records, while the men’s team broke five school records.

“I am very happy for Steve and we wish him the very best as he pursues something that is very close to his heart,” Georgetown Athletic Director Lee Reed said in a press release. “This decision was a very difficult one, but Steve has done a great job with our program here and he leaves it in great shape.”

The school has stated that it will begin searching for a replacement immediately.
