The sporting culture may not be why you chose to attend Georgetown (or maybe it is!), but you should experience it to the fullest now that you have arrived. Our one-time-national-championship-winning men’s basketball team headlines Georgetown Athletics, but there are multitudes of sports to cheer on.
Georgetown competes at the highest level as a Division I school in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Nearly all teams compete in the Big East Conference, of which Georgetown was a founding member (except football, in the Patriot League), which is among the best in many sports, especially basketball.
For most sports, you can watch for free by showing your GOCard — except men’s basketball. You can purchase individual game tickets or a one-time student season ticket, which cost $99 last season.
During the fall semester, you can dive right in by attending football, men’s and women’s soccer and field hockey games. You can spectate Division I football games in the middle of campus on Cooper Field as the Hoyas look to improve upon their best season since 2011.
Both men’s and women’s soccer games are on Shaw Field, above the Yates Field House, and draw large crowds — each team has been highly competitive in recent years, with the men’s team winning a national championship in 2019. Field hockey is also played on campus at Georgetown’s third outdoor arena: Kehoe Field.
Fans flock to watch the men’s and women’s basketball teams during the winter, making it the most popular season. The women’s team competes at the McDonough Arena on Georgetown’s campus, making its games easier to attend. The team hosts powerhouse competition such as the University of Connecticut and the University of Maryland on campus nearly every year, so this is an accessible way to see top-tier basketball talent.
Men’s basketball draws the largest crowds of any team and competes at the Capital One Arena, an official NBA arena. Georgetown Athletics provides free buses to games, leaving from outside the Leo J. O’Donovan Dining Hall. The team also plays a few games at McDonough to provide more accessible viewing opportunities.
The spring sports season brings events such as baseball, softball, rowing and men’s and women’s lacrosse. The baseball and softball teams both play at off-campus stadiums. The good news is that games are played in series across weekends, which makes traveling to games easier. You will often see Georgetown’s rowing teams practicing in the Potomac near the Georgetown waterfront, but their competitions are usually at away tournaments.
Both lacrosse teams have had recent success, including the men’s Big East championship last year and the women’s runner-up finish in their own tournament. They play home games on Cooper Field and generally have good student attendance due to their national competitiveness.
Georgetown sporting events are a fun way to build campus culture and school spirit, whether you are cheering on the Hoyas from the Capitol One stands or watching a sport you have never taken interest in before. Student sections at games allow you to meet other students with common interests, especially across schools and years. Take full advantage of going to a Division I school and cheer on as many of the Hoyas as you can.
