Georgetown University hosts six undergraduate schools that allow you to carve your own path during your time here. Each undergraduate school is unique, ensuring that there will be something for everyone. All six schools share the Jesuit values of service and academic excellence, and you’ll find your home no matter which school you’re in. Here is a short introduction to each undergraduate school:
The College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) is the oldest and largest of the five undergraduate schools. It was founded in 1789 and hosts 26 departments, 14 interdisciplinary programs, 50 majors and 60 minors. More commonly referred to as “the College,” the school forms an academic core of Georgetown rich in heritage and history as the first Jesuit higher education institution in the United States. Currently overseen by Dean David M. Edelstein, the College is diverse and expansive, offering something for every Hoya.
The School of Foreign Service (SFS) was founded in 1919 as the premier school of international affairs. Established in the wake of World War I, which prompted growing U.S. involvement in international affairs, the SFS aimed to educate and prepare U.S. students for global professions. In addition to an extensive core curriculum, the SFS offers nine majors that span politics, business, economics, history and even the intersection of science and international policy. With core classes covering international relations, comparative political systems and even a foreign language proficiency requirement, SFS students receive an education that is specialized, rigorous and interdisciplinary under Dean Joel Hellman.
The McDonough School of Business (MSB) evolved from an undergraduate program that began in 1936 into a formal school in 1957. Renamed in 1998 after graduate Robert E. McDonough (SFS ’49), the MSB has come to be known for its integration of business with global policy. Led by Dean Paul Almeida, the MSB offers seven majors, including finance, accounting and international business. With careers in consulting, entrepreneurship and investment banking, the MSB prepares students to work in fields across business and international affairs.
The Berkley School of Nursing (SON) was founded in 1903 but was re-envisioned and separated to a standalone entity focusing on nursing in 2022. Renamed in 2025 to the Berkley School of Nursing, SON focuses on socially just and value-oriented healthcare. Offering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing under Dean Roberta Waite, the SON’s curriculum emphasizes experiential, hands-on learning to equip students for real-world careers in healthcare.
The School of Health (SOH) was founded in 2022 when it split from the School of Nursing & Health Studies (NHS) into its own independent school, making it Georgetown’s youngest school. Consisting of three academic departments that each underscore global health, health management and human science, the SOH has been led by Dean Christopher J. King since 2022. Aimed at finding innovative healthcare solutions, the SOH trains students to approach the field from differing perspectives.
The McCourt School of Public Policy was founded in 2013 as a graduate school, but expanded to undergraduate programs in 2023. McCourt’s joint program in public policy (JPPP), offered in coordination with the College, allows students to achieve a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy. As part of the JPPP program, students spend their first two years on the Hilltop Campus and their final two years on the Capitol Campus, engaging with diverse aspects of policymaking and the Georgetown experience.
