After helping the Boston Cannons secure victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks last week, former Hoya Kyle Sweeney (MSB ’03) was named Major League Lacrosse defensive player of the week.
Sweeney, whose 299 career ground balls placed him third on Georgetown’s all-time career leaders list, managed a goal and an assist against the Bayhawks. Sweeney also helped shut down Chesapeake star attack Danny Glading en route to keeping Boston perfect in four MLL games this season.
The Bayhawks-Cannons matchup had a Hilltop feel to it, with 2011 graduates Barney Ehrmann and Dan Hostetler and Brendan Cannon (COL ’08) opposite Sweeney on the field for Chesapeake. Ehrmann, an honorable mention All-American this season, was picked 26th in this year’s draft. Hostetler was the 42nd pick.
Sweeney and another former Hoya, 2005 graduate Brodie Merrill, will ensure that the Blue and Gray are represented in Major League Lacrosse’s all-star game. That event is set for July 9 at Harvard Stadium in Boston.
