The Georgetown women’s lacrosse team destroyed its district rival, the George Washington Colonials, 19-3. The Hoyas were just coming off a 16-6 loss to the No. 9 Loyola Maryland Greyhounds, so this March 12 matchup was quite the rebound. 

The Hoyas (3-3) started the game strong and pushed the Colonials (1-5) onto their back feet. The Hoyas won the first draw and senior midfielder Annabelle Albert whipped the ball past the George Washington goalkeeper for her tenth goal of the season. 

The Colonials, however, launched a furious response, landing several shots on goal and tying the game at one apiece. 

Then Georgetown began to break away. Within 90 seconds of each other, senior attacker Jordyn Sabourin and sophomore attacker Kylie Hazen netted goals for the Hoyas to pull ahead 3-1. 

Though a George Washington goal made it seem as if the lead were vulnerable, a second barrage of goals said otherwise. Sabourin beautifully sniped her second goal of the day, and a mere 46 seconds later a shot from graduate midfielder Erin Bakes brought the score to 5-2 to end the first quarter.

The Hoyas’ defense managed to prevent a lot of the Colonials’ offensive attempts. In a successful effort to stop the flood, junior goalkeeper Emily Gaven made a save with 6:30 left in the first quarter, preventing the Colonials from getting a third goal. 

The Hoyas dominated the second quarter. Senior midfielder Celia Walsh got her first goal of the season, making the score 7-2. With 5:12 left of the second quarter, the Hoyas extended their lead as Bakes assisted sophomore midfielder Tatum Geist for yet another goal. 

After the dust settled at the end of the second quarter, the score was 11-3, marking one of Georgetown’s best individual quarters of the season. In this period, the Hoyas had 15 shots on target compared to the Colonials’ one. This discrepancy of accurate shot attempts shows both Georgetown’s resilient attacking ability and stifling defense.

At halftime, George Washington strategized on how to slow down the Georgetown offense. To open up the third quarter, the Colonials eased the pace of play and gained more possession. 

The many fouls on both sides added to the lethargy of tempo, but the Hoyas eventually got the ball rolling. Bakes added her second goal of the day and graduate midfielder Mary Pagano added her first.

The third quarter closed in spectacular fashion. The Hoyas were one man up with one second left of the third quarter when Bakes passed the ball to Walsh, who rocketed another goal in for the Hoyas. This was Walsh’s second goal of both the game and the season, making this her breakout performance of the year. 

Despite the fact that the Hoyas lost three out of the quarter’s four draws, the third quarter ended with the score at 15-3. Despite the electric Hoya offense, both teams had five turnovers in this quarter. 

In the fourth period the Hoyas put even more pressure on the Colonials. Not even a minute into the quarter, sophomore midfielder Neely Holt scored her second goal of the season, making the score 16-3. By this point, the win seemed all but confirmed. 

With 9:39 left of the game, the Hoyas rattled off their final rally of goals by winning a string of draws. Sophomore midfielder Tessa Brooks scored her second of the season followed by another from Hazen, her second on the day. With 4:26 left of the game, sophomore attacker Lauren Lisauskas scored for the Hoyas, making the final score 19-3. 

Following a blowout win over George Mason (1-6) on Mar. 16, the Hoyas will next face UPenn (2-4) on Saturday, Mar. 19 at 3:00 p.m.
