The Georgetown men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams prepare to face Yale and Boston College at home this Saturday, Oct. 26th, at 1:00 pm. The Hoyas look to rebound from tough losses in their previous contests against William & Mary and Towson last Saturday at McCarthy Pool inside of Yates Fieldhouse. The men lost to William & Mary 198-64 and 205-79 to Towson, while the women lost to William & Mary 221-73, and 247-53 to Towson.
The men were led by their 200 yard medley relay team, made up of Michael Young, Christian Kilgore, Martin Vanin and Matthew Mandel, which took second place with a time of 1:35.52. Michael Ng also took second in the 100 yard backstroke in a time of 52.19. Martin Vanin and David Chung swam strong in the 100 yard butterfly, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Vanin finished with 51.97, with Chung close behind with 52.68. On the women’s side, Lauren Kahan led the way with her performance in the one-meter diving event. Kahan took second place with an overall score of 224.85. Molly Gaynor took fifth place in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:19.69. Katie Duncalf also took fifth in the 200 yard backstroke, finishing in a time of 59.68. The women will need to rely on the successes of Kahan, Gaynor, Duncalf, and others in order to finish well on Saturday.
Saturday’s meet will be the season opener for the men from Yale. Yale looks to provide a very competitive matchup for the Blue and Gray, as the Bulldogs look to pick up right where they left off last season. Last season, the Yale men won every meet they competed in from November 10th, 2012 until Jan. 26th, 2013, beginning with a home meet against Columbia in November and ending with victories over Fordham and Rider in late January. The Yale men ultimately ended their season with a fourth place finish at the Ivy League Championships. The Yale women experienced very similar success last season, going on a three meet winning streak in the middle of the season against Cornell, Dartmouth, and Penn.
The Boston College men and women are coming into Saturday’s meet on a winning streak, hot of their dominating win at the Northeast Catholic Invite last weekend in which they played host. Prior to the Northeast Catholic Invite, the Boston College men won their season-opening meet on October 11th by defeating Bryant University. Outside of their Northeast Catholic Invite win, the Boston College women have had narrow loses against Bryant and New Hampshire so far this season. Both the men and women from Boston College should compete very well against the Blue and Gray this Saturday.
The upcoming meet against Yale and Boston College will be the final competition for the men and women before heading to Piscataway, New Jersey for a Big East Quad Meet on Friday, Nov. 8th. Big East rivals Rutgers, Seton Hall, and Villanova will be in attendance, with Rutgers playing host. The Big East Quad meet will serve as a good test for the Hoyas to see how they compare against some of their biggest Big East rivals early in the season. Last year the Quad Meet was moved to February instead of its usual place in the fall because of Hurricane Sandy last October. Last season, the men defeated Seton Hall, but fell to Villanova, while the women fought hard, but came out without a victory.
