WOMEN’S BASKETBALL | GU Seeks Revenge in Connecticut

Although it has won four games in a row, the No. 14 Georgetown women’s basketball team (19-5, 8-3 Big East) will need a complete effort against No. 3 Connecticut (22-2, 10-1 Big East) this weekend to keep the streak alive. The Hoyas will hit the road and attempt to upset the third-ranked Huskies in Storrs, Conn., tomorrow afternoon.

“We just need to play hard and not get intimidated because we are playing UConn,” junior guard Sugar Rodgers said. “Playing hard will be a key to our game.”

The Blue and Gray will be seeking revenge against the Huskies, who ousted them from the NCAA tournament last year in a heartbreaking Sweet 16 thriller. The Hoyas are one of the top teams in the Big East this season — and one of the better teams in the country — but earning a win against Connecticut is never an easy task.

The Huskies only have two losses on the year, but those were to the first- and second-ranked teams in the country in Baylor and Notre Dame, respectively. They have steamrolled through the rest of their competition and enter Saturday’s game undefeated at home and on a 10-game win streak.

Connecticut also brings the Big East’s best statistical defense to the table. They have held opponents to only 44.7 points per game. However, Georgetown Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy and her team seem to be focusing more on their own defensive execution than on worrying about Connecticut’s defense.

“We need to play very good defense, especially defending in the post, and we need to limit our turnovers,” Williams-Flournoy said.

The Hoyas’ defensive focus is justified, though, as the Huskies also are an effective and balanced offensive team. Sophomore point guard Bria Hartley, who averages 4.3 assists per game, runs the offense, while senior guard Tiffany Hayes leads the team in scoring with 15.8 points a contest.

Sophomore center Stefanie Dolson averages 6.2 rebounds per game and has the best individual field goal percentage in the Big East at just over 60 percent. And on the perimeter, the Huskies have two great shooters in redshirt junior guard Caroline Doty and freshman forward Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis.

“We need to focus on not allowing the ball into Dolson since she is a big key to their offense,” Rodgers said.

However, the Blue and Gray have talent to run with the Huskies. It starts with Rodgers, who is one of the best pure scorers in the country and leads the Big East with 19.9 points per game. She is also coming off an impressive double-double against Seton Hall.

A trio of seniors has also been crucial to the Hoyas’ success of late. Point guard Rubylee Wright has distributed the ball well all year, forward Adria Crawford has been a force on the boards and forward Tia Magee has been playing some of her best basketball of late, providing a second scoring option for the Rodgers-centric offense.

And although Williams-Flournoy sees room for improvement, Georgetown’s aggressive, high-pressure defense has frustrated its opponents and forced turnovers all year.

“We’ll still continue to play our style of play, we’ll press and run in transition, but obviously we will make any adjustments at game time,” Williams-Flournoy said.

This weekend’s contest will be a challenge for the Hoyas, but a win would not only improve the team’s resume but also be a statement victory heard around the country. But Williams-Flournoy and her team are trying to treat it like any other game.

“We take it one game at a time,” Williams-Flournoy said.

Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday at Connecticut’s Gampel Pavilion.
