GU Pummels Rider, Splits Road Trip

The Georgetown women’s basketball team broke a two-game losing skid Saturday afternoon with an 81-54 victory over Rider University (1-8) in Lawrenceville, N.J.

The Hoyas (8-3, 0-1 Big East) concluded a four-game road trip that started with a victory over Wake Forest but took a turn for the worse with losses to the University of Miami and Rutgers before Saturday’s win.

After exchanging several runs in the first half, the Blue and Gray took a 39-31 lead into halftime against Rider thanks to an 11-3 spurt in the final three minutes of the frame. The Hoyas relied on a balanced attack in the first half with six players scoring at least five points on 44.4 percent shooting.

With 15:52 left in the game, Rider pulled within five points before Georgetown went on another run, scoring 16 of the next 17 points over the a five-minute stretch to take control of the contest. The Blue and Gray outscored Rider in the period 42-23 while shooting 54.8 percent from the field.

The Hoyas held the advantage in almost every statistical category, edging the Broncs from the field 49.3 to 37.2 percent. The Blue and Gray forced 25 turnovers to Rider’s 17, while Georgetown uncharacteristically dominated on the boards 40 to 26, including 15 offensive rebounds.

The Hoyas held a significant advantage inside, outscoring the Broncs 48-10 in the paint. Junior forward Adria Crawford led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting while adding five rebounds and two blocks.

Sophomore guard Sugar Rodgers also added 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting (3-of-11 from beyond the arc) with seven rebounds and four steals.

The Georgetown bench chipped in 36 points, led by junior guard Alexa Roche’s 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 on three-point attempts. Freshman guard Samisha Powell also contributed with eight points, three assists and three steals in 20 minutes of action.

The Hoyas have the week off for final exams before returning to action one week from Sunday when they will be at home against Missouri State at 2 p.m. at McDonough Arena.
