The Georgetown track and field team looks to continue its recent success when the Hoyas travel to Philadelphia to compete in the 117th Penn Relays Carnival.

On Wednesday afternoon, the women’s distance medley relay team — a talented squad that has looked impressive this outdoor season — kept up their solid work by taking the event. Villanova was the favorite coming into the day, having won the DMR at the Big East Indoor Championship and looked to be a step ahead of the Blue and Gray.

But a squad consisting of graduate student Renee Tomlin, sophomore Amanda Kimbers, freshman Chelsea Cox and junior Emily Infeld had other plans. They snatched the first-place spot with a blistering 10:51.49, demolishing the previous Georgetown record of 11:01.47.

The DMR team is the first of three women’s relay teams competing in the Penn Relays this year. The highlight of Friday afternoon is the 4×1500-meter team, likely consisting of freshman Madeline Chambers, junior Lauren Borduin, Tomlin and sophomore Rachel Schneider – all of whom are All-Americans.

Saturday brings the women’s 4x800m team, which is currently undecided. Chris Miltenberg, the head coach of cross country and assistant coach of omen’s track and field, will likely draw from the pool of Borduin, Cox, Tomlin, Schneider, Infeld and freshmen Becca DeLoache and Emily Menges. In short, Miltenberg can choose from the wealth of talent and versatility that has propelled the women’s middle-distance team all year.

The action for the men starts on Friday. The men’s DMR will showcase each class; freshman Billy Ledder will hand the baton off to senior Toby Ulm, who will be followed by junior Theon O’Connor before sophomore Andrew Springer closes the race.

The next day features the men’s 4x800m team, which will likely consist of one runner from the DMR team, sophomore Brian Hencke and senior Dan Leyh.

The Hoyas’ strength all year has been in the relay teams and middle-distance, so this weekend should showcase the talent that has been the core of the track and field team. Georgetown looks to prepare for the Big East outdoor championship next week and the NCAA track and field championship later in May.
