The Georgetown men’s golf team palced seventh out of 20 teams at the Wildcat Invitational in Villanova, Pa., last weekend. Unlike their previous tournament, however, the Hoyas failed to improve their scores over the course of the event.
The Blue and Gray shot a 16-over par, 300, in the first round and 31-over par, 315, in the final round, giving them a total score of 47-over par, 615.
“We accomplished the first goal of the weekend, which was to play well enough in the first round to play with the lead group for the final round,” Head Coach Tommy Hunter said. “We struggled in the final 18 holes. To be honest, we hit our low point of the season.”
Senior co-captain Danny Hathway led the Hoyas, tying for 13th place with a 7-over par, 149. In the first and second rounds, Hathway fired a 2-over par, 73, and a 5-over, 76, respectively.
“Hathway was the only player to produce a positive result,” Hunter said.
Junior Brian Dorfman, who was Georgetown’s top finisher in its last event, placed 32nd at 10-over par, 151. Dorfman struggled as the tournament progressed, posting an even-par, 71, on the first day and a 10-over par, 81, on the final day.
The Hoyas’ next finisher was sophomore Curtis Loop, who tied for 41st place with a 14-over par, 156. The sophomore tallied a 6-over par, 77, and a 8-over par, 79, in the first and second rounds, respectively.
Georgetown’s other senior co-captain, Brandon Ellis, finished in 59th place. Ellis fired a 10-over par, 81, in the first round and an 8-over par, 79, in the second round, combining for an 18-over par, 160.
Junior Taylor Hall rounded out the field in 67th place with a 20-over, 162. The junior had his best day the second day, firing a 12-over par, 83.
The Hoyas will look to regroup and perform well at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday.
“We have had a history of not panicking when times are tough — we make the necessary adjustments and move forward,” Hunter said. “We hope to rebound this weekend at the Princeton Invitational.”
Unlike the men’s team, the Lady Hoyas never had the chance to participate in a final round this week as Tuesday’s final round of the Hoya Invitational was cancelled due to rain. The rainout gave the Hoyas a solid fifth place finish and an overall score of 68-over par, 644, highlighted by the play of sophomore Audrey Dalton and junior co-captain Joan Dulieu.
“I was happy with our finish. We could always do better, but under the conditions we did pretty well,” Interim Head Coach Mary Mattson said.
Dalton recorded a 14-over par, 158, tally and tied for 11th place out of 89 players.
“Audrey works really hard and she really deserved to have a good finish here,” Mattson said. “I couldn’t be more proud of her.”
Dulieu ended the first two rounds tied for 14th place, shooting a 15-over par, 159.
“Joan’s first round was excellent under the conditions, and she is always a solid player,” Mattson said.
Junior co-captain Eunae Jo and freshman Molly Concannon posted similar scores, recording scores of 164 (+20) and 165 (+21), respectively. Jo finished in a tie for 32nd and Concannon for 36th. The Hoyas’ last competitor, sophomore Jordan Redfield, fired a 26-over par, 170, and tied for 59th.
The Blue and Gray compiled a score +54 on par fours, good for third in the field. They also recorded 90 pars, the fifth most at the event.
Georgetown hopes the Hoya Invitational will provide some momentum for the Big East tournament, which starts on April 17.
“[The Hoya Invitational] was a good confidence builder for our team,” Mattson said. “We are excited for the Big East and will work hard over the next few weeks and see what happens.”
