Men’s Soccer

What seemed to be a charmed 2010 season for the Georgetown men’s soccer team ended in the second round of the NCAA tournament last November, when the Hoyas fell in penalty kicks to ACC powerhouse North Carolina.

This fall’s squad will have a very different look on opening day, having lost 11 seniors to graduation. But don’t let their youth fool you — what the Blue and Gray lack in experience, they make up for in talent. The dynamic midfield duo of sophomore Steve Neumann and junior Ian Christianson were the Hoyas’ leading and second-leading scorers, respectively, despite being underclassmen on a team stacked with seniors. Junior midfielder Andy Riemer, who started 16 games last year, will also return this year.

Still, Georgetown fans have some cause for concern. It remains to be seen how effectively Neumann and Christianson can shoulder the scoring load without graduated forwards Jose Colchao and Chandler Diggs. Additionally, Matthew Brutto and Mark Wilber, the only goalkeepers who saw game action last year, both graduated and leave behind a vacuum in the net.

The Hoyas will be unpredictable and perhaps frustrating to watch in what looks to be a rebuilding year. But the season will surely be entertaining, and will hopefully include a few flashes of brilliance.
