Track & Field | Seven Hoyas Set Personal Records

The Georgetown track and field squads sent athletes to both the Stanford University Twilight Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. and the University of Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., which saw seven Hoyas set personal records.

At the Stanford University Twilight Invitational, the Hoyas were led by sophomore Joe White, who won the men’s 800-meter event with a personal record time of 1:46.67, the fifth fastest time in Georgetown’s history. Sophomore Charles Cooper followed White by claiming fifth place with a time of 1:49.88, a personal record.

White credited both his training regimen and coaches for helping him achieve success.

“Everything has been falling into place as far as a training standpoint,” White said. “We’ve had a slow build up to running a fast 800. I’d contribute most of the success to the coaching staff and the team. Without people to push and motivate you in training, running fast can become much harder. Also, having a great coaching staff to go over nerves and race strategy goes a long way.”

On the women’s side, junior Sabrina Southerland continued her strong season by clocking in at 2:03.51 in the women’s 800-meter race. This performance helped her capture second place overall in the event. Freshman Sarah Schmidt, in her Georgetown individual debut, claimed third place with a time of 2:04.02. Senior Heather Martin (2:04.98) came in fifth and junior Emma Keenan (2:05.19) finished in seventh.

In the women’s 1500m, graduate student Andrea Keklak recorded a time of 4:18.41, good enough for sixth place. Keklak was followed by sophomore Kennedy Weisner who ran a personal record time of 4:21.36.

At the University of Virginia Challenge, senior Darren Fahy won the men’s steeplechase with a time of 8:46.26. Junior Scott Carpenter clocked in at 8:54.94, a personal record, to claim tenth place.

In the men’s 400m dash, junior Daniel Carpenter crossed the finish line at 49.29 and junior Ted Foster followed up with a time of 50.78.

Junior Jonathan Green, in the men’s 10000m captured fourth place overall, finishing with a time of 29:33.57.

The Hoyas set three personal records in the men’s 1500m. Graduate student John Murray led the way for the Hoyas as he crossed the finish line at 3:48.62, a personal record. Murray was followed by graduate student Thomas Williams (3:53.41) and freshman Nick Wareham (3:55.36). Both of these times were personal records.

Junior Kenneth Armstrong recorded a season best in the men’s long jump with 6.64m. This performance helped him place ninth.

For the women, graduate student Katrina Coogan recorded her best performance as a collegiate runner in the women’s 5000m with a time of 15:50.51. This time was good enough for second place in the race. Sophomore Autumn Eastman ran a time of 16:30.34, finishing in 22nd.

Freshman Audrey Belf, competing in the first 1500m of her career clocked in at 4:22.99 and claimed 15th place.

Looking ahead, both Georgetown track and field teams will compete in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. this weekend. White believes that both squads have what it takes to be successful at this prestigious meet.

“I personally believe we have one of the deepest programs in the country on both the men’s and women’s side,” said White. “I think the depth of the team will show at Penn relays because we don’t have to run any one person in a bunch of races like other good schools.”
