The Georgetown men’s and women’s rowing teams had another strong performance last weekend when they traveled to Cambridge, Mass., for the 55th Head of the Charles Regatta. This regatta is the largest in the world, as nearly 11,000 rowers compete each fall. Compared to the rest of the field, the Hoyas finished with a total of 316.99 points, which put them 33rd out of hundreds of contestants. The first place team, Yale University, tallied a total of 821.98 points. 

Altogether, the teams had four boats in the water for their third regatta of the season. The Head of the Charles consistently marks one of the biggest weekends of the year for a number of rowing clubs, collegiate and otherwise. 

On the men’s side, just one boat raced for the Hoyas. In the men’s lightweight fours, Georgetown placed 10th out of 16 universities. The team’s final time of 16:41.077 put it about 41 seconds behind first-place finisher University of Pennsylvania, earning the Hoyas nearly 70 points. This boat was comprised of freshmen Gavin Ramm, Justin Taliaferro and Eli Raboniwitz, as well as sophomore Matthew Turner and senior Ryan Zuccala. 

The women’s team demonstrated strong performances in the lightweight eights and the club fours, placing third. The lightweight eights earned the Hoyas 97.128 points with a time of 16:10.108, just under three seconds behind winner Princeton University. This boat featured seniors Anna Kemmerer and Caroline O’Brien, juniors Monica Collins and Mia Tsudis, sophomores Caroline Sterman and Anastasia Sukharevsky, and freshmen Claire Shriver, Ana Orriols and Bailyn Prichett.

The other third-place finish came from the Club Fours, a boat which competed in a field of 55 competitors. With sophomore Katharine Zarate as the coxswain, seniors Chloe Schalit, Grace Donabedian and Grace Calavan and freshman Graciella Leon put together a time 4:22.607. 

The Hoyas came in just behind the women of Duke University, which compiled a time of 18:37.474, and the University of Tennessee, with a time of 18:45.960. This result, however, was deemed invalid after this Georgetown boat was disqualified. 

For Georgetown’s last showing on the weekend, a final time of 4:17.830 was sufficient for the Hoyas to earn a 10th-place finish in the Lightweight Fours. Leading for the Hoyas in this race was junior Taylor Villante, sophomores Claire Miller and Hannah Weingartner, and freshman Francesca Donovan. 

The men’s lightweights will return to the water Oct. 27 for the Princeton 3-Mile Chase in Princeton, N.J. The heavyweights will also row in this race after competing in the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta just a day earlier in Philadelphia. 
The women’s team will also head to both Philadelphia and Princeton, as the lightweights will race on both days, while the openweights will be in the water Saturday. This race will be the last regatta of the season for the lightweights, as only the openweights will compete in the Head of the Occoquan on Nov. 2 in Fairfax, Va.
