Hoyas Ready to Charge Into Big Easts

The middle of spring marks the end of the Georgetown tennis teams’ regular seasons. In years past, this time has been characterized by faltering finishes. This year, however, both the men and women are surging at the right time.

The men finished their season with three straight home victories. The first two of these came against Big East foes Villanova and Connecticut, while the team defeated Navy on Wednesday afternoon. Their 5-2 victory marked a strong finish to the season, as the Hoyas overcame dropping two early points to dominate the singles matchups.

Senior Anthony Tan paired up with freshman Charlie Caris to win the last of the team’s doubles matches, while also anchoring the singles unit with a three-set victory. Caris and senior co-captain David Tillem were also among the five victors for the Blue and Gray in singles play.

Tillem said he was pleased with his team’s recent performance.

“We had a bit of a rough patch in the beginning of the season,” he said. “In these last seven matches or so we’ve really hit our stride.”

Though the women dropped Wednesday’s meet to local rival Maryland 6-1, they have experienced similar success, winning three straight home matches, including two against Big East rivals Villanova and Connecticut.

Sophomore transfer Lauren Greco continues to give the women a boost with her strong play this semester, earning the Hoyas their only point on the day against Maryland, one of the ACC’s powerhouses.

Georgetown now has a week to prepare for the Big East championships in South Bend, Ind.

For the women, it marks their first qualification for the conference tournament in three years. The three home victories allowed them to finally qualify, and freshman Alexandra Landers was grateful for the Georgetown faithful’s turnout.

“It was a real boost to see all the fans out there,” she said. “They were important wins that got us into the Big East.”

On the men’s side, the Hoyas are also back in the tournament. The team’s recent performance provides a stark contrast to their slides entering the Championship tournament in seasons past.

Given their strong play recently, the Hoyas might want to get back on the court as soon as possible. Tillem, however, welcomes the short break before encountering the team’s toughest test of the season.

“We’ll have a really good chance to continue refining everything that’s been going on and get mentally prepared,” he said. “We have guys playing their best tennis of the season, and there’s definitely no better time to do it than now.”

In addition, Tillem surveyed the possible matchups, including potential rematches with teams like St. John’s that defeated the Hoyas earlier this season.

“We’d like a crack at redemption,” Tillem said.

Whether or not that extra motivation plays a role next weekend, the Hoyas are hot and the rest of the Big East will be well served to take notice. “
