The Vagina Monologues: Here’s a Conversation Starter

A production of “The Vagina Monologues” debuted last night in the Devine Theatre. All four nights are sold out clean, either despite or because of the play’s controversial nature.

Plenty of bloggers and organizations have spoken out heatedly against the university’s support of the production. Many of the most outspoken critics have condemned Georgetown for supposedly undermining its own Catholic identity, citing the vivid descriptions of homosexuality and masturbation in the performances to back up their claims.

But what these commentators seem to miss in bashing this show is the vital social dialogues it sparks. Take Back the Night and GU Men Creating Change, the on-campus sponsors, represent the show’s greater purpose: boosting awareness of sexual assault and violence against women — social ills regardless of religious affiliation. For students, thinking, discussing and confronting these issues is a process that can only be helped by these monologues.

The play’s themes and messages are certainly provocative; some scenes have been described as vulgar, even by supporters. But its portrayals reflect the realities of the world we live in. Aiming to break down barriers and spur discussion, “The Vagina Monologues” have a shot at producing positive results on this campus. If you didn’t score a ticket, talk to someone who did — and let the conversation flow.
