WOMEN’S BASKETBALL | GU Tries for 7 in a Row

No. 16 Georgetown (20-5, 8-3 Big East) will attempt to extend its winning streak to seven this Sunday when it travels to Queens, N.Y., to take on St. John’s (16-7, 5-5 Big East).

The Blue and Gray are as hot as any team in the Big East, having ripped off six straight wins since an embarrassing road loss at Notre Dame three weeks ago. In their two most recent wins — home blowouts of Cincinnati and South Florida — the Lady Hoyas held each of their opponents to a meager 38 points.

“We just go out there and play defense. It’s the main key to our game,” said sophomore guard Sugar Rodgers, who leads the team in scoring and steals. “[If we do that], we’ll get another win.”

Adding to Georgetown’s confidence is the fact that Rodgers has not been the only one playing well during the recent winning streak. Strong performances from the supporting cast — especially junior guard Rubylee Wright — have been invaluable in several Lady Hoya victories.

“[Wright] has really stepped up and learned to be the point guard that we needed her to be on this team,” Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy said. “[Junior forward] AdriaCrawford has been good for us as well, continuing to play her role and score when she need[s] to score.”

While they haven’t been quite as impressive as Georgetown thus far, St. John’s is not to be taken lightly. Led by sophomore guard Shenneika Smith, the Red Storm are 8-2 at home this year and have won more conference games than Georgetown’s last two opponents combined.

“Shenneika Smith is a very, very good wing player, very athletic,” Williams-Flournoy said.

Additionally, St. John’s presents a different kind of threat for the Blue and Gray. The athleticism of their post players will negate the quickness advantage Georgetown usually enjoys by playing with a small lineup.

“Their athleticism really matches up to our athleticism, and [junior forward] Da’Shena Stevens can play on the perimeter, she can play on the block, she can play in the high post,” Williams-Flournoy said. “Sometimes she’ll move to the five spot, and there’s not too many athletic fives like her in our league that match up to [junior forward] Tia Magee. So it’s not as much of an advantage for us; it’s more of a clean match up now.”

Georgetown will have to crash the boards hard against the athletic Red Storm. The Lady Hoyas gave up 27 offensive rebounds to South Florida on Tuesday and cannot afford a repeat performance.

“We’re going to continue to focus on defense,” senior guard Monica McNutt said. “We’ve got to eliminate second-chance opportunities for them.”

But despite the different look the Red Storm offer, the Blue and Gray are confident they can win on the road. On Feb. 1, they bounced back from a bad first half to decisively beat the Louisville Cardinals, who are 10-2 at home.

“Playing at home, you’ve always got a little bit of extra momentum,” McNutt said. “So we’ve got to cut their heads off early.”

Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena.
